Reaching the Andaman Islands from Chennai

There are two ways by which you can reach the capital town of the Andamans when travelling from Chennai—via air and water. Let’s explore each option below:

    Reaching Port Blair by airflights-to-andaman.jpg

If you are travelling to the Andamans Islands from Chennai, then you should know in advance that it is going to be a very smooth journey. There are daily direct flights from Chennai to Port Blair, the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. There is only one airport in the Andamans—Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair. It takes nearly 1 hour 50 minutes to reach there from Chennai. The round trip costs approximately Rs.6,000. Flights are faster and more comfortable. Thus, it is a preferred option.

Pro travel tip- Taking an early morning flight will help you in utilising the rest of the day.

    Reaching Port Blair by water

    Luxury-Cruise-from-Chennai-to-Andaman.jpg

You can also reach Port Blair by sailing from the ports of Chennai. Operated by the Indian government, the voyage via these ships takes nearly three to four days (50-60 hours). Haddo Wharf is the main seaport in the town. Three to four sailings take place from Chennai every month. You should know in advance that these passenger ships are not cruise liners and thus, do not have entertainment and food options. Moreover, booking can only be done from the shipping corporation office in Chennai. The booking process is quite time-consuming. Online booking is not available. Ships are cheaper but general passenger ships are more troublesome. If you are travelling between May and October, then seasickness is also common. However, if you want to experience a voyage amidst the blue sea, then we recommend a ship journey. It is an unusual adventure in itself.

    What an underwater wedding involves?

Like any other wedding ceremony, an underwater ceremony is also a wedding ceremony, the only difference being that it is carried out under the water. It is an intriguing concept for sure but couples, who want something exclusive, love this idea a lot. Tying the knot under the water is a great choice for you if you are a snorkeler, scuba diver, surfer, ocean lover, or simply an adrenaline junkie.

The bride and the groom will be required to wear a mask and a scuba unit. It should be ensured that they both get the perfect fit for everything. If you both do not know diving at all, then a few scuba diving lessons will be given to you so that you are comfortable under the water. However, there is also an option of wearing an underwater helmet as no training will be required then. A safety briefing will be given before your wedding ceremony. After that, you will dive down wearing the necessary gear. During your underwater wedding ceremony in the Andaman Islands, you can either stand up or kneel. The choice is completely yours.

    uw1.jpg

How is the underwater wedding ceremony conducted?

Whether you want to tie the knot, exchange the rings, or exchange your vows, anything can be done in an underwater wedding. Diving slates are used for a written version. There are a few ways by which you can hear each other as well. You can wear underwater helmets with audio systems or a full face mask with com units. And then, you can exchange the rings. Seems out of a fairytale, isn’t it?

Whist wearing a scuba diving mask, kissing your partner first time as a married couple can be more awkward than romantic. But it must be absolutely okay with you given the kind of rare wedding you are having.

You will be ascending to enjoy a festive party with your guests after the underwater wedding. Just change your clothes and join the fun!

Remember to check the weather forecast on a regular basis as your dive may get postponed or cancelled on the day due to poor weather. Good visibility, no currents, and preferably warm water are the essential requirements for an underwater wedding.

The ceremony is held a few feet below sea level, where close friends and family members can accompany the bride and groom. * Some can’t resist Ideas for your quality Romantic Memories:

    1. Candle light dinner: Candle light dinner beneath the moon, along sea shore, is great thing to experience. Deep conversations are taken forward with a glass of wine is more romantic thing to do. Several restaurants in Andaman offer such candle light dinner. Candlelight dinner on the beach is a must-do sensory delight, probably it is the most romantic dining experience, ideal for an under-the-stars celebration. The aromatic candles spread the romantic mode and you will be led to the dining table arranged near the beach. Enjoy the delicious food on your table as the sea waves play the chorus music.
    2. Dine on a cruise ship: Cruise ship journey is demanded by every tourist. Couples can have a romantic dinner with the open blue sky and sea to get heavenly experience.
    3. Dive: Swim along the marine life of the sea with your partner makes your honeymoon more memorable.
    4. Wobble along with the music: No matter whichever club you go, this adds more romance in between you and your partner.
    5. Indulge each other, together: Couples massages encourage bonding, increase the comfort level for both individuals, and offers a rare opportunity. For you do something together where you’ll both leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. As if these weren’t reasons enough, imagine experiencing all of these things on a pristine beach. The sound of waves lapping on the shore in the background, and the cool ocean breezes teasing your skin.
    6. Scavenger Hunt on the Beach: Scavenger hunts on the beach make for such a cute date idea. This is particularly true if going in the late evening or early morning as there will be fewer people around and the things that get hidden won’t be disturbed. Not only is this a fun activity to do with a significant other, but it really sparks up the bond between two people. This is because the scavenger hunt revolves around their relationship and there is usually a prize at the end. This could be the proposal ring from the last idea, flowers, jewellery, tickets to something, etc. Basically, the prize is any kind of gift the other wants to give their boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, or wife! Planning out a scavenger hunt may sound like a lot of work, but it is not! In fact, it can be quite simple. It all depends on how much hunting has to be done. Shorter scavenger hunts can be fun and still result in a great time. However, going too overboard and it taking too long can ruin the experience. There should be a balance! This balance can be 5 to 10 clues. The clues can be pictures or quotes from the relationship or a favoured television show. The key is to create a build-up for the prize. The clues will drop subtle hints as to where the other clues are and ultimately the prize. It can also be clues describing bits of the final prize as well. When doing this on the beach, planning is key. The clues can be put in envelopes or small boxes from a dollar store that can be buried in the sand. They can be found through playing “hot or cold” by telling the person how close they are to a clue. Another great way to execute it can be through a small map that is drawn up for the clue locations. Other places to consider hiding clues can be in driftwood, behind rocks, or even plant life that backdrops a beachfront. This fun idea really makes an exciting beach date!
    7. Collect sea shells and make each other jewelry: Part ways from your significant other and find seashells and other beach items to make jewelry for your other half. Even if the jewelry is not 100% wearable, it is the thought that counts.
    8. Have a Private Slow Dance Party: Pop in your I-Phone into portable speakers and make a playlist with the most romantic slow songs(perhaps Lag ja gale would be the best one, thank me later) for couple dance. Dance the night away under the moon lite sky.
    9. Carve your names into the sand: Use a stick or your fingers to carve you names into the sand. Although, the water might wash away your words, you love will live through you both.
    10. Holds hand while you star gaze: When you are at the beach, the stars seem bigger and brighter than usual. You can try guessing the name of the star constellations while holding each other’s hand.
    11. Pitch a tent and wait for sunrise: Sunsets are always amazing to watch but if you can catch the sunrise, it is even better. Pitch a tent together and stay up all night waiting for the sunrise. You can fill in the time to talk about your likes, ideas, and hobbies.
    12. Under-water proposal: Proposals are most special yet important part of a relationship for any couple. So, its highly advisable that it should be done in a way that its romantic essence never gets faded even after decades. The more creatively done, the romantic it becomes and what can be more creative than doing it underwater, where the thoughtless mind intensifies soulful values to the proposal.

This is seasonal and is subject to weather conditions. You can enquire about this from established PADI Dive centres.

  • The weather is warm, the days are long, and flowers are in full bloom, summer truly is a magical time of the year. After saying yes to the love of your life, you might be in the process of finalising a wedding date. But it doesn’t just stop there. Does it? You have yet to decide upon the shenanigans. Right from the decor to the cuisine served, there’s a lot that needs your attention while planning a wedding. Summer weddings have their charm, and we are here to bring you up to speed. What if we tell you that we have some fun and easy ideas that will make your wedding, unique, interesting, and a picture-perfect affair? Unconventional is the new conventional. Destination weddings are just another trend that became a norm after grabbing attention for their intimate and memorable take on weddings. So, let us begin at the beginning.

    1. Take Vows At A ‘Cool’ Destination

Summers are a perfect time to sip on a pina colada while sunbathing on a beach. Well, imagine a beach wedding, under the shade of palm trees, and the perfect sound of the waves crashing against the shore, leaving little shells behind. Summer weddings can be a sultry affair when you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. With the right venue in hand, to get hitched and lo and behold, your summer wedding might just become a tale of its times. Though the first destination that pops in anyone’s head at the mention of the beach, is Goa, here is another place that is just right for a summer wedding. We agreed to take the unconventional route, did we not? Andamans in all its glory, with its exotic backdrop, crystal clear waters and famed beaches can be ideal for your D-day. A treasure trove of exquisite vistas, Andaman is full of things that can make you go gaga. Don’t you want a wedding that is as incredible and unique as you? Well, what better way to ensure that by deciding to take vows at a place we would like to call 'a little slice of paradise'! As songwriter Van Morrison says and we quote, "Smell the sea, and feel the sky. Let your soul and spirit fly."

    2. Turn Your Outdoor Function Into A Pool Party!

An Indian wedding hardly is what you call a day’s affair. Unlike English weddings, our celebration lasts up to three to four days; to say the least. One of the days hosts functions for either Haldi or Mehndi or both combined. The best way to have an outdoor day-function in summers and literally not get fried in the heat is to turn it into a pool party. Summers are yet another chance of plunging into the waters and taking a chill pill. What better way to celebrate your Mehndi or Haldi, dancing to the pop chartbusters while playing in the pool with your friends and cousins? The photos during the function will definitely give out some major Bollywood vibes! It sure is a way to notch things up a little. With a poolside bar and a DJ on board, the guests are going to love it. And, so are you!

    3. Take your cocktail party on a cruise!

While some wedding ceremonies revolve around the family, some functions are a treat, especially for your friends and cousins. A cocktail or an engagement party sounds like one of them. What can your cocktail party have in common with some dope Bollywood party songs, other than the drinks and glamour? Well, how do you like the idea of a cocktail cruise party? Andamans is a delight in summer. Owing to the star-studded night sky, the ocean below transforms into a shimmering sea of stars. With a live DJ, cocktails, mocktails, seafood cuisine, and your guests on board, the cruise will be ready to set sail in the evening. Put your dancing shoes on and swing to the tunes of your favourite dance number! Your close ones, a cruise, a celebration, hmm, where have we heard a song for that? Hint Hint, our pick for the same has to be, Gallan Goodiyan! What do you say?

    4. Choose a unique theme!

Theme plays the most crucial role in a wedding. Choose breezy and fresh summer hues for the decor. The flowers can be arranged according to the season, adding a touch of summer in the ambience. You can also play around the idea of shells and sand while sending out the wedding invitation. Basically, you can experiment a whole lot with the theme and colours. While the attire most couples go with for a wedding is traditional, that doesn’t mean you can’t try different outfits for other functions. Experiment with breezy, flowy, breathable fabric and style. Remember, the backdrop is exotic on its own, and the right theme in hand might just accentuate everything.

    5. Try your hand at water activities

Andamans and adventure go hand in hand. When the wedding preparations get a little overwhelming at times, there is no harm in letting go for a while and taking in your surroundings (we mean nature and not the chatter) to feel at ease. Even the guests might find themselves looking for ways to blow off some steam. What better way to this, than by indulging in a little aqua adventure? The vast ocean seduces you to take a dip and traverse the world of corals and fishes underwater. On your visit to Andamans, you have snorkelling, scuba diving, parasailing, undersea walking, speed boating, and kayaking at your fingertips. Might we also recommend an underwater photo shoot for the couple? You are welcome.

Turtle Nesting - What is it?

Turtle Nesting is a term collectively used to describe the process of sea turtles laying eggs on sandy beaches and the hatching of those eggs. The location and season of nesting entirely depend on the species of sea turtles. Andamans is a popular nesting site in the South Asian region— and the only one in India. During the nesting season, female turtles make their way to the beaches and dig a hole in the sand where they further lay their eggs. These sea turtles manage to place around 100 eggs in each nest and make 3–7 nests during the nesting season. Female turtles lay their eggs late at night and leave them unattended; ordinarily, the eggs take 45 – 90 days to hatch. They break open the shell with their temporary tooth, after which a plethora of hatchlings begin crawling through the soft sand towards the ocean for the first time.

Types of Sea Turtles Found in Diglipur

Diglipur relishes the geographical advantage that ensures the annual visits by four kinds of the turtles, namely Olive Ridley ?(Lepidochelys olivacea)?, Leather Back (Dermochelys coriacea) , Hawksbill ?(Eretmochelys imbricata) and Green Turtles ?(Chelonia mydas)?. The Olive Ridley turtles are well-known in the Andamans. They produce about 100 eggs on each occasion with an incubation period of approximately 60 days. The leatherbacks are an unusual species in the Andaman archipelago for their population is among the significant territories in Indi-Pacific region. They produce about 85 eggs in each nest with an incubation period of almost 80 days. Hawksbill turtles are deemed vital for they are the most abundant species in India. They lay around 150-200 eggs in each nest with an incubation period of 60 days. Green Turtle is the most prevalent species in the Andamans. The eggs of green turtles hatch in almost 50 days with a success rate of 90% on a natural nest. If the nest is artificially relocated or caused any disturbance, the success rate may drop to 65%.

Ross and Smith Islands are home to Olive Ridley turtles that are widely popular for turtle nesting. Being at the right time at the right place, travellers might get to witness this natural wonder. On the populated and popular nesting sites, the hidden nests are located, unearthed and relocated to guard these endangered species. ?Diglipur Island lies roughly 298 kilometres via road and 100 nautical miles (180 kilometres) via sea from Port Blair. Nesting Season

Turtle nesting takes place during the winter season, and visitors can witness this must-see occurrence between October and March. A sight to watch, if lucky, people can witness both phenomenons, the nesting and the hatching. The phenomenon is hugely influenced by weather conditions. The nesting season of Olive Ridley turtles starts in October and ends in April. The nesting season of leatherbacks starts from March and ends in July. The nesting period of Hawksbill starts in September and ends in October. The nesting season of green turtles starts in June and ends in November.

    If you are a traveller

Turtle nesting is usually witnessed at night, and it is advised to hire a local guide. They know the region well, and would be the best bet at educating you about the process.
Remember, you must be quiet as a mouse during this time.
Remember, to not try and touch the turtles or the eggs or go near them. They might feel threatened and go back into the ocean.
Remember, to not feed the turtles.
Remember, to not litter on the beach. Especially with plastic as turtles often mistake it for jellyfish.
