How to reach:

To avail a visit to these islands, one requires a forest permit that can be obtained from the Forest Office at Diglipur on all days barring Sunday. The entry fee imposed for the permit, is 500 INR for foreigners, 50 INR for Indian adults, 25 INR for children. To preserve and sustain the serenity of the island, the government does not permit visitors to stay back into this island. As the island is in the closer vicinity of Diglipur, one can reach Aerial Bay to travel to the island by ferry. It takes around 20 minutes to reach the island, and Dungis or wooden boats are no longer permitted, so visitors hire fibre boats.

Medical Facilities on Ross & Smith Islands- There is no medical facility near the beach, the closest community Health Centre is at Diglipur and the nearest medical facility is the G.B.P Hospital at Port Blair offering a team of super-specialized Doctors in the various departments.

Timings- Ross & Smith Islands can be visited anytime between Sunrise to sunset, thus 7 am to 6 pm is the best time to visit the twin islands to experience the serenity of nature.

The Government administered helicopter services- Pawan Hans operates in this island which allows tourists to travel to and fro Port Blair and Neil Island within no time. This service was introduced as an addition to the faster mode of travel in case of Government officials and medical emergencies. It is considered to take 15 minutes to land you on Neil Island with proper safety and precautions. If you have a restricted time period for travelling and spending your vacation, then you should definitely consider this option to save time and invest it in dwelling the time in moving around the island.

Seaways:

Government ferries are the budget friendly mode of transportation except the fact that it requires lot of patience to stand in the queue to book your tickets. These have to be done 3 days before the departure so if you have planned to stay in Andaman for long then you might go for this option. If you have hired any tour operator or travel agent then you can approach them for your conveyance but then it would bear extra charges. The sailing schedules for these ferries are also published in the Administrative News of Andamans daily so you can take a look and decide accordingly. The most annoying disadvantage of travelling via Government ferries is that there is a high possibility of tickets not being confirmed so why take a risk, isn’t it? Bus: There is only one Government bus that is available here for the public transport and starts from the main bazaar (market) and goes till Sitapur Beach. It comes after every 1.5 hrs, through which you can have the entire visit to the Island twice. The ticket costs around Rs. 20/- which is very cheap. The bus cater you to have interaction with other tourists and local people to collect verbal and heartful memories.

Auto-rickshaws: The tourists can also go for auto-rickshaws, for which there is no fixed price and thus differs largely depending upon the mode and place of bookings.

Government Bus: If you are willing to save out on travelling cost then you must consider taking a government bus from Port Blair from the STS Bus Terminal at Aberdeen Bazaar. These buses offers shared trips and aren’t equipped with air conditioners. The starting point of these buses is in the morning from Port Blair which covers Baratang Island, North and Middle Andamans. There is a possibility that the bus do not take a return trip to Port Blair on the same day so be prepared well in advance to board adifferent bus if you wish to return to Port Blair on the same day from Baratang. The only disadvantage of choosing government bus is that it does not pick you up from your location and hence, you would have to board it wither from the main Bus terminus or from some bus stops on the Andaman Grand Trunk Road. Thus, make sure you book your tickets will in advance and take a confirmation before you head towards Baratang Island.

Private Bus: These buses also start from Port Blair in the morning itself. They are well equipped with air conditioner because of which its fare is a bit more expensive as compared to that of the government buses. But if you want to ease your travel experience then you should try it out before giving it a second thought. In these buses, there is also the facility of special coaches for the one day Baratang trippers which have to be pre-booked. Like the government buses, these buses also do not cater the facility to pick you up from your location and hence, have to board it from a specific location as per the tickets and the nearest boarding location or from some bus stops on the Andaman Grand Trunk Road.

Government Ferry: Nilambur Jetty is the place from where you get a jetty to Baratang. The government and private buses can take you from Port Blair to this jetty. The ferry fare is very reasonable as it is government operated and takes only about 15 minutes to reach Baratang  which could be a time saver. The only problem is that this ferry doesn’t come back to Port Blair on the same day making it less preferred for the travel option for a one day trip. After this ferry drops the passengers at Baratang Island, it leaves for Havelock Island ( Swaraj Dweep ).

Private taxis/ cabs: This could be a more expensive yet an altogether comfortable experience for you as you make your way from Port Blair to Baratang Island. It is considered as a good option for the ones who are more prone to motion sickness because the bumpy rides can spoil your entire mood if not taken care of the health while travelling. A private cab/ taxi can be booked as per the number of passengers so if you are travelling with a small group, cabs/taxis which are generally 5-7 seater can do but if it’s a comparatively larger group then you can go for Tempo travellers.

According to the 2011 census of India, the Island has 5691 inhabitants. The tourists can choose whichever option they feel comfortable in to reach the Island with their desired level of content. There are 2 major routes to reach Rangat Island- via Port Blair and via Havelock Island. The ways to commute to Rangat Island are: Roadways, Seaways and Airways.

Options via Port Blair:

Port Blair- the capital city of Andaman and Nicobar Islands provides ample of option to travel to Rangat Island.  Tourists have the feasibility to choose their modes and ways of transportation as per their needs, comfort and convenience.

Roadways: Travelling via road is considered one of the most feasible option where you can encounter and appreciate the travel journey with your family and friends. The lush green trees alongside the roads give a refreshing feel while the air gently touches your face. It would take almost 7-8 hours to cover the route to Rangat Island which is approximately 93 kms from Port Blair. There are 3 modes through which you can travel via roadways, that is, Government Buses, Private Buses and Private Cabs/Taxis.

Government Bus: The Government Buses provide you the most pocket-friendly yet amazing experience as you travel from Port Blair. These buses have different departure timings from Port Blair which can be easily enquired from the ticket counter. It takes approximately 8 hours to reach Rangat from Port Blair through a government bus. The route encompasses the Andaman Grand Trunk Road and drops off the passengers at the Public Bus Stand at Rangat Island. These buses do not offer air-conditioned services but you won’t be disappointed as the natural air does its work very efficiently. The government Bus depot of Port Blair provides the bus tickets which can be a cumbersome process to procure due to long queues. The affordable cost of the buses and the transportation of local people to and fro increases the tickets demand. The boarding location of these government buses is at the Aberdeen Bus Depot. But there are other pick up points on the Andaman Trunk Road too. It is recommended for the tourists to enquire about the pickup point that falls in the proximity to their accommodation location for a better convenience.

Private Buses: The Private Buses offer comfortable journeys from Port Blair to Rangat Island. The departure timings of these buses vary and tourists have ample of boarding options available to reach Rangat. The duration of journeys is 8 hours, same as that of the government buses. These buses have both AC and non AC facilities so tourists can choose as per their convenience and budget. These buses, whether AC or non AC have higher ticket fares in comparison to that the government buses. The tickets can be obtained from their respective reservation offices in Port Blair. The boarding point of these buses is also mostly the Aberdeen Bust Depot but there are option to board from other locations, such as on Andaman Trunk Road as well which has to be enquired beforehand.

Private Cabs/Taxis: This is considered to be the most reliable mode of transportation as this fits in all your schedules and would let you enjoy every location without being anxious about the return schedule and other travelling requirements. You shall not be time restricted and hence would be able to enjoy the serenity of Rangat much better. The driver being a local resident of Andaman would be able to guide you better than anybody else, direct you to some unexplored locations and share facts and testimonies of his experience which can turn out to be an enjoyable talk as you travel.
 
This option is feasible for the ones who have time restriction and have fixed date schedules and days to explore Rangat Island and other islets of Andaman. The cabs/ taxis have to be booked in advance which can be done both online and offline as per the plans of the tourists, Another advantage of travelling via cabs/taxis is that they would come to pick you up at your accommodation place which would save your time and energy.

Seaways: It is rightly said that the waves of the sea sweeps away all the worries and help you to relax in the middle of water. To reach Rangat Island, you can opt for the seaways to via ferry to calm your brain cells while floating in the water. It is a very convenient and affordable way which could lead to your destination. The island is almost 50 nautical miles by seaways and one has to note that the shipping services are available for 4-5 days in a week so the travelling plans have to be made accordingly. The time taken to cover the route via is about 4-5 hours which can be relishing amongst family and friends.

Government Ferry: The Government operated Ferry makes it much easier to commute from Port Blair to Rangat via the sea route. The duration of the voyage shall be approximately 5-6 Hours in which the route that shall be followed to reach the Rangat would be from Port Blair via Neil Island and Havelock Island. This could be a trouble maker as it depends on the number of passengers and their respective boarding spots and destination spots. The government ferry is not available everyday which is the biggest disadvantage. Also, the tickets of the ferry has to be booked one or two days in advance from the STAR ticket counters in Port Blair. The harbour for Rangat is the Yerrata Jetty. So the government ferry can be an option for the travellers who have no restriction of time.

Airways: The airways can be a less time taking option but the only disadvantage is that it is seasonal so the fares and its availability greatly varies according to the weather and season.

Helicopter: It takes less than an hour to reach Rangat Island in helicopter. The high altitude and the speedy winds will blow your mind away as you fly. It is seasonal so the plans for having a helicopter ride has to be made accordingly.

Option via Havelock Island and Neil Island:

If you have to visit Rangat Island after you are done exploring Havelock Island or Neil Island then there is only one option available that lead you to Rangat and that is Government Ferry. It is available on alternate days and covers the popular route: Port Port Blair to Rangat via Havelock Island and Neil Island. Thus, the passengers can board from Havelock Island or Neil Island if they aren’t planning to board the ferry from Port Blair. The route of this ferry ends at Long Island, which is yet another magnificent island that can’t be described my mere words.

Transportation in Rangat:

The transportation services here in this island are less as compared to the more commercially developed islands of Andaman group. Tourists have to book private cabs/taxis or take government buses to visit the various awe-inspiring locations here. The richness of this place lies in its deprivation of the intrusion of modernity and technology which is often reflected by the simple means of transportation available here.

Duration of Stay in Havelock:

Tourists would be amazed to explore the natural aura of this island and would be restless to bid adieu to it after their overwhelming experience. Maximum of 2 days can be invested to stay around in this island which shall be sufficient to cover all the major spots and give you a time to relax at the same time. Generally tourists complete their exploration in one day but if you want to give time to yourself in the lap of nature, you should definitely stay for more than one day.

People of Rangat Island:

The land that cherishes the rich verdure of nature is blessed with people who take care of this land with utmost dedication and principles. This island has a dense population of 38815 people as per the Indian census (2011) who reside across 75 villages approximately. It is interesting to note that this island has 14 gram panchayats as well. The residents of this island have diverse linguistic background but they stay together as one community. Most of the locals are the residents of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal. The main occupations of the local people comprise of fisheries, cultivation and stall vendors such that of tea stalls, food stall and market vendors.

The mangroves with the darkest shade of green that combines with the purest shade of blue of the waters paints the delightful location which one can’t even imagine. 4) Dhani Nallah Mangrove and Beach: If you like long nature walks, then the Dhani Nallah Mangrove walk would give you the maximum level of satisfaction. It is 20 km away from Rangat Island and a one km walk along the wooden board which is surrounded by the mangrove creeks leading to the Dhani Nallah Beach. It’s really fun to walk on those pathways with your family and friends as you make amazing memories while chit-chatting. The beach is another thing of beauty for the tourists as it magical effect leaves the tourists speechless. Here too, on ecan notice the nesting ground of the turtles from December to February. One could also observe a tiny eco hut as you walk through the mangroves, which is named after Olive Ridley, the most frequent turtle species of the Dhaninallah Beach. Sitapur Beach is the unexpected: nestled at the tip of Neil Island, with vast stretches of white sands and unimaginably blue waters enticing successive waves of new visitors. Two arched lagoons and coconut trees sprawled across the beach makes for the perfect natural backdrop. Natural limestone structures are scattered all over the beach, adding to its scenic charm. During low tides, one can walk to the second lagoon and explore little caves. The endless stretch of white sand, Sitapur Beach wears many hats and is popularly known as sunrise beach and locally as beach number five. Owing to its geography, Sitapur Beach is prone to higher tides and stronger currents, but swimming is still possible at all times.

Getting There

One can reach Sitapur Beach on Neil Island after travelling 65 kilometres from Port Blair. The journey to the beach itself is quite refreshing as it takes you via paddy fields and lush forests. You can either rent a bike or board an auto-rickshaw from the market to reach the beach. Cabs are the most convenient means to get to the beach, but single-point cabs are hard to book, so you can instead book the taxi to tour all the three beaches in Neil. Though a few buses shuttle in between, the frequency is low. Or, if you feel a little adventurous, you can also walk down the fields to reach the beach.

Sitapur Beach is easily one of those beaches where you can take a long walk without a care in the world along the shoreline. Mostly known for its enchanting golden sunrises and sunsets, the beach is named the Sunrise Beach officially by the administration. Hit the beach at dawn to behold the magnificent sunrise above the horizon. Since this is a rocky beach, you need to be careful while swimming. There are no water activities conducted on this beach, and you can pass your time sitting on rocks, soaking your feet in the water, feeling the breeze and unwinding. For a better view of the sunset, you can get to the "Sunset Point" which lies at a vantage spot towards the entry of the beach. The beach is uncrowded, and you can spend a lazy day sipping coconut water.

Getting There

One can reach the Natural Bridge on Neil Island after travelling 43 kilometres from Port Blair. Upon reaching the Jetty, you can hire a bike or book a taxi to reach Laxmanpur Beach, which lies close to the bridge. From here you need to take a 200 meters walk to see the bridge. Or you can board an auto-rickshaw as well. The entire journey takes nearly 30 minutes. Stroll along the craggy shore to see other corals, tide pools, and diverse marine life.

The Natural Bridge is a landmark in Neil Island and a photographer's favourite. Look at the adjacent wall that bears the brunt of the 2004 Tsunami and shielded Neil Island from devastation. You can spot many starfishes, sea cucumbers visible in the shallow waters between the rocks as well as crabs, sea urchins, colourful corals, and seldom tiny octopuses. The beach accompanying the bridge is called the dead coral beach and is ideal for trekking rather than swimming. The iconic Howrah bridge got its name from its Bengali settlers, and they delight in showcasing their culture through folk dances and music. The island hosts the Island Tourism Festival and Subhash Mela in winters that you must attend if your dates match.

Getting There

One can reach Bharatpur Beach on Neil Island after travelling 40 kilometres from Port Blair. Government-operated ferries, as well as private ferries, shuttle between Neil Island and Port Blair, and it roughly takes 2 hours to reach the island. Upon reaching the Jetty, Bharatpur beach is hardly 500 metres away. There are signs and directions posted at the Jetty to make it easy for travellers. If you are staying the night, you can also hire an auto or rent a bicycle to explore the beaches at your pace and travel around the island. To ensure a hassle-free experience, book your ferry tickets at least two days in advance.

Bharatpur beach is the only spot in Neil Island where water sports are permitted. Travellers can amaze themselves by taking a unique glass-bottomed boat ride where they get an opportunity to explore the corals and colourful fishes through the glass bottom of the boat. It is the best way to go underwater without getting wet. You can also snorkel in the pristine waters of this beach to witness one of the most stunning coral reefs up close. Diving underwater is another must-do in Bharatpur beach to peek at the striking display of marine life. The temperature and clear visibility of the water attracts many travellers for sea exploration in Neil Island. Run by the Government of India and the Central Agricultural Research Institute, Sippighat farm is an 80 acre cultivated farmland where research and development work happens for the cultivation of spices like cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, coconut and pepper. For ornithologists, a significant attraction on the farm will be the presence of various species of migratory birds. Located 15 km from Port Blair on the road to Wandoor, Sippighat Farm comes under the Government and the Central Agricultural Research Institute responsible for carrying out the studies and methods to improve spice cultivation. Resplendent with natural beauty, the place is known for farming of nuts and spices in the area. The farm covers an area of about 80 acres of cultivated land. This farm is a part of the research and development program of the Government of Andaman and Nicobar islands aimed towards increasing agriculture. Farmers are allowed to grow various spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and pepper in the farm, exported to different parts of the world.

Getting There

Located 15 kilometres from Port Blair on the way to Wandoor, lies the Sippighat Farm.

Local Bus: Mohanpura bus terminus is the central terminus. The buses' working hours are from 4:30 am to 12 noon and are available throughout the day. Private travel companies also provide buses for travelling within Port Blair and other parts of Andaman, from Mohanpura terminus.
Cabs: There are multiple shop establishments for car hire and rentals. Auto-rickshaws and minibuses are also available for local transport.

Established in 1959 as the ‘Soil Conservation and Demonstration Center’ the Sippighat farm is a mass of cultivated greenery surrounded by natural verdant beauty. The farm demonstrates the best cultivation practices one could adopt in the islands. They not only provide information on multi-cropping but practice it too. Another attraction of the farm is a species of migratory birds, which makes it a must-visit place for ornithologists or birdwatchers. Some of the spotted ones include the Pacific Golden-Plover, Eurasian Curlew, Mongolian Plover and other exotic species. Visitors can find a wide variety of crops from spices like vanilla and black pepper to cash crops like coffee. Properties of the medicinal plants like Aloe vera are displayed here by the staff. SAI Water Sports Complex is present at one end of the Sippighat Farm, and offers a wide range of water sports. There is an Agricultural Research Centre inside the area that studies the methods to improve spice cultivation.

The museum is located within the Chatham Saw Mill complex and is roughly 10 km away from central Port Blair. One can access it via road by hiring a cab or a taxi.

Cabs: Private travel companies in Andaman provide cab services to all major tourist attractions.
Rental: Rental services for two-wheeler vehicles is a choice. Hiring two-wheelers and going round the nearby places connected to the Island may be a good option.
