  • Overview

The abode of palm-fringed beaches, long shores, emerald ocean, and natural wonders, Ross & Smith Islands lie at a distance of 20 kilometres from Diglipur and 320 kilometres from Port Blair. Cradled in the lap of the Andaman archipelago, these twin islands orchestrate a colour play in nature's palette that changes with the tide and the sun. One of the most sought after destinations, Ross and Smith Islands can be identified in the pictures by its symbolic natural sandbar connecting these sister islands. To preserve the environment commercial activities are not licensed. The crystal clear water surrounding Ross & Smith Islands is ideal for snorkelling and swimming. Nevertheless, in the absence of service providers for the same, visitors are encouraged to bring their snorkelling gear to explore the hidden underground gems.

One of the primary highlights to visit Diglipur is being able to cover the mystic twin islands. The oh-so-beautiful islands gained so much popularity among the travellers owing to the published articles and pictures. An aerial shot of two islands surrounded by emerald waters connected by a strip of sand has made rounds in several publications and social media. Ross & Smith Islands are two separate islands connected by a slim fifty-meter long natural sand bar where travellers get to walk from one island to the other while being surrounded by crystal clear tranquil sea. Visible during low tides, the crescent-shaped "Sandbar Beach" gets submerged during high tide. While reading up on these islands, a description like picture-perfect virgin beaches, turquoise water and tropical forests, is most likely to come up. Lush forests envelop the beach and are ideal for exploring natural hiking trails. The beaches are seldom overcrowded, owing to its remote location, and visitors can bask in the experience at their own pace.

    How to reach:

To avail a visit to these islands, one requires a forest permit that can be obtained from the Forest Office at Diglipur on all days barring Sunday. The entry fee imposed for the permit, is 500 INR for foreigners, 50 INR for Indian adults, 25 INR for children. To preserve and sustain the serenity of the island, the government does not permit visitors to stay back into this island. As the island is in the closer vicinity of Diglipur, one can reach Aerial Bay to travel to the island by ferry. It takes around 20 minutes to reach the island, and Dungis or wooden boats are no longer permitted, so visitors hire fibre boats.

    Offers:

Smith Island has a lot in store for travellers, offers ample bamboo huts, changing rooms and toilets. It's also best suited for island camping and exploring the coastal village life. At times the wild elephants that reside in the forests can be found bathing in the sun. The most prominent highlight of the island is a Marine Sanctuary which makes it the perfect place for spotting gorgeous coral reefs underwater and a rare collection of colourful fishes. Ross and Smith Islands are home to Olive Ridley turtles that are widely popular for turtle nesting. Being at the right time at the right place, travellers might get to witness this natural wonder. If you visit Ross islands offseason, chances of you experiencing the beach exclusively to yourself rise exponentially.

Wondering what to do on Ross & Smith Islands?

    1. Turquoise water makes Ross & Smith Island ideal for snorkelling and swimming. One side of the bar has shallow water, making swimming easier for beginners and crystal clear waters make snorkelling a cherishable experience.

    2. There is a Marine Sanctuary on this island where one can spot beautiful coral reefs and numerous colourful fishes underwater.

    3. The beach is surrounded by tropical forests and is a favourite amongst trekking and hiking enthusiasts. Travellers can indulge in hiking these trails on their own.

    Closing Statement:

What an experience it would be if you could go walking from one beautiful island to another attached by a picturesque white sand bar amidst crystal emerald sea! Littered with sea-shells these islands offer an engulfing solitude where visitors can spend hours sunbathing in solace along with other aqua adventures. The boats arrive at Smith Island from where the visitors can take a ten-minute walk to Ross Island. One side of the sand bar has shallow and calm lagoons which makes it ideal for children and adults who are not sure about their swimming skills. The other side has mild waves for people who prefer a certain level of thrill while venturing into the sea. Minutes turn into hours in the blink of an eye captivated in the beauty of these islands. Lazing around on the beach, strolling barefoot over the fine sand from one island to the other, swimming in the clear waters, and just soaking up the sun takes up an entire day at these twin islands.

Getting There: The most convenient way to get to the Ross and Smith Islands is via a boat from the Aerial Bay Jetty.
What to do: Snorkelling, sunbathing, long walks on the beach, nature trails in the tropical forests.
What not to miss: The natural sand bar connecting the islands.
Best time to visit: Summers in the twin islands are warm and sultry. The best time to visit the islands would be in the months of October to May.

A gentle yet essential reminder for travellers is that they need to ensure bookings to stay in any of the accommodations in Diglipur as these places are mostly reserved well in advance. The most well-known amongst these is the Turtle Resort run by the Director of Tourism. Besides that, there is Pristine Beach Resort which presents travellers with eco-friendly huts, and Saddle Peak View Resort which grants visitors an unforgettable view of Saddle Peak. As mentioned above, several tourists prefer to stay at Kalipur, a little away from Diglipur, where the stay options are ample and the beach is a stone's throw away.

  • Andaman and Nicobar islands are a cluster of 572 islets, of which 36 are inhabited, and fewer are open to tourists. With the government easing up on permits, tourism in the union territory has been swiftly picking up since 2018. Some islands are home to several indigenous tribes who have zero  contact  with  the  outside  world.  The islands located north of 10° north latitude are called Andaman, and the islands positioned south of 10° north latitude are termed Nicobar.

North, Middle, and South Andaman, are collectively known as Great Andaman, and Diglipur is one of the hidden gems in the Northern Andamans. With hills and linear longitudinal valleys, the Andamans has rough terrain. Constituted of sandstone, limestone, and rocks of Cenozoic age (i.e., formed during the past 65 million years), flatland is scarce and is limited to Betapur region on Middle Andaman and Diglipur on North Andaman. Diglipur is the largest town in the Andaman Archipelago lying at a distance of 185 miles north of Port Blair via road and 100 nautical miles via sea.

    {show_package package-id="50,14,16,30" title="Our Package"}

Northern Andamans is surrounded by several small island groups, and the island's primary town is Diglipur. Spread across the area of 1400 square kilometres, Diglipur is considered to be the biggest inhabited town of the Northern Andamans. Formerly, the island was home to an indigenous population of the Great Andamanese, the Bo community, that are nowhere to be found today. Currently populated by immigrants from the Indian mainland and their descendants, the island also boasts of the highest point in the archipelago, Saddle Peak at 731 metres.

Nestled at an elevation of 43m above sea level, Diglipur lies in the southern region of Aerial Bay. The Aerial bay is the solitary seaport for Diglipur and is the primary boarding point for all the inter-island ferries arriving into Diglipur from Port Blair, Havelock, Neil, and other parts of the island. This is also the point from where you take a motorboat to Ross n Smith Island. Diglipur also benefits from tourist influx to nearby attractions in North Andamans, which include the likes of Ross and Smith islands, the Saddle Peak National Park, the beaches at Lamiya bay, Ram Nagar, Kalipur and mud volcanoes.

Diglipur has a diverse geological composition with beaches, misty peaks, mud volcanoes and limestone caves. It is traversed by the Kalpong River, the only river of the Andaman islands. Otherwise known for its oranges, rice and marine life, Diglipur offers an experience of living in a peaceful village, away from the hustle-bustle of urban life. An untouched beauty for the tourists, Diglipur offers a remote landscape and an off the beaten path experience.

Every year nearly 200,000 visitors visit the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, but sadly, 95% of them never omit the sacred Port Blair- Havelock- Neil Island triangle. The lush backdrop of rainforests, extensive stretches of sand, and crystal clear waters add to the appeal of the beaches while also offering aqua adventures such as snorkelling, scuba diving, and sea walking to the tourists. We implore you to discover Diglipur, one of the beautifully kept secrets in Indian destinations, unique for its heterogeneity in culture, language, religion, cuisines, landscapes, sea, and climate.

These buses do not offer air-conditioned services but you won’t be disappointed as the natural air does its work very efficiently. The government Bus depot of Port Blair provides the bus tickets which can be a cumbersome process to procure due to long queues. The affordable cost of the buses and the transportation of local people to and fro increases the tickets demand. The boarding location of these government buses is at the Aberdeen Bus Depot. But there are other pick up points on the Andaman Trunk Road too. It is recommended for the tourists to enquire about the pickup point that falls in the proximity to their accommodation location for a better convenience.

Private Buses: The Private Buses offer comfortable journeys from Port Blair to Rangat Island. The departure timings of these buses vary and tourists have ample of boarding options available to reach Rangat. This option is feasible for the ones who have time restriction and have fixed date schedules and days to explore Rangat Island and other islets of Andaman. The cabs/ taxis have to be booked in advance which can be done both online and offline as per the plans of the tourists, Another advantage of travelling via cabs/taxis is that they would come to pick you up at your accommodation place which would save your time and energy.

Seaways: It is rightly said that the waves of the sea sweeps away all the worries and help you to relax in the middle of water. To reach Rangat Island, you can opt for the seaways to via ferry to calm your brain cells while floating in the water. It is a very convenient and affordable way which could lead to your destination. The route of this ferry ends at Long Island, which is yet another magnificent island that can’t be described my mere words.

    Getting There

One can reach Sitapur Beach on Neil Island after travelling 65 kilometres from Port Blair. The journey to the beach itself is quite refreshing as it takes you via paddy fields and lush forests. You can either rent a bike or board an auto-rickshaw from the market to reach the beach. Cabs are the most convenient means to get to the beach, but single-point cabs are hard to book, so you can instead book the taxi to tour all the three beaches in Neil. Though a few buses shuttle in between, the frequency is low. Or, if you feel a little adventurous, you can also walk down the fields to reach the beach.

    Be There Do That

Sitapur Beach is easily one of those beaches where you can take a long walk without a care in the world along the shoreline. Mostly known for its enchanting golden sunrises and sunsets, the beach is named the Sunrise Beach officially by the administration. Hit the beach at dawn to behold the magnificent sunrise above the horizon. Since this is a rocky beach, you need to be careful while swimming. There are no water activities conducted on this beach, and you can pass your time sitting on rocks, soaking your feet in the water, feeling the breeze and unwinding. For a better view of the sunset, you can get to the "Sunset Point" which lies at a vantage spot towards the entry of the beach. The beach is uncrowded, and you can spend a lazy day sipping coconut water.

    While You’re There

Carry some snacks with you as there aren't many stalls selling refreshments on the beach.
Arrive before dawn and witness the most spectacular sunrise on Neil Island.

    Closing Statement

Situated at the southern tip of Neil Island, Sitapur Beach nestles in the arms of lush greens from three sides that unfold into an incredible view of the open sea on the other. Set apart from the mainstream, Sitapur is the quietest beach on Neil Island and is well-preserved and quite raw in the sense of nature and wildlife. Crystal clear water, azure sky, the limestone formations, against the white rug of sand makes it a photographer's favourite. The best time to visit this beach is between September and May, as the weather is moderate and the sun is bright.

  • Neil Island is stroked by the constant rock and roll of waves. Adorning the most exquisite landscapes, Natural Bridge in Neil Island is testament to this. A cup of sunshine is poured all over the land – allowing it to bask and shine in the warmth. Well, Natural Bridge is, at first glance, extraordinary in its beauty. It is, as locals refer to it, the Howrah Bridge. Let’s take a walk across nature's bounty and discover what it has to offer us. The natural bridge-shaped rock formation is basically a rock jutting out composed of two living corals. Best seen during low tides, the landscape makes for rare and extraordinary photo opportunities. Enclosed in the emerald waters, with small fishes, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and starfish swaying along the waves, Natural Bridge is perfect for thrill seekers.

The iconic Howrah bridge got its name from its Bengali settlers, and they delight in showcasing their culture through folk dances and music. The island hosts the Island Tourism Festival and Subhash Mela in winters that you must attend if your dates match.

    While You’re There

Note that you do not require any entry fee to visit the beach.

Return before it gets dark as the route is tricky.
Be careful while clicking photographs and do not step on any creature.
Wear comfortable and sturdy shoes when you visit this place because you will walk on a wet and slippery rocky path.

    Closing Statement
