There is a lot of history associated with Ross Island, and this is the top reason to visit this extraordinary place. The island is home to some of the oldest British and Japanese structures in India showcasing the lavish life of Britishers after the occupied Andaman Islands. The island also served as the residence of the old Chief Commissioner. All operations in the isles, including the construction of Cellular Jail, were overseen from Ross Island.

The ruins include the following along with many others:

    • Church
    • Secretariat
    • Government House
    • Chief Commissioner's residence
    • Long strips of luxury gardens
    • Swimming pool
    • Grand ballrooms
    • Tennis court
    • Water treatment plants
    • Hospital
    • Printing press, etc.

Looking at these remnants of our unforgettable past will take you back to the penal settlement age and remind you of our struggle for freedom.

Attend the light and sound show

This show will take you back to the past by presenting the history of how everything was planned and constructed in the islands. The show majorly showcases the penal settlement period including how Britishers came to the islands, what they focused on constructing, and setting the administration to rule the isles. The luxurious lifestyle of the Chief Commander and his family is also showcased in the show. It will also explain the difficulties faced by the inmate Indian workers who build the jail, only to be thrown in their cells later on. We recommend attending this show if you want to add a pinch of history to your vacation.

    Visit the sanctuary

Located in the middle of the island, the sanctuary is home to deer and peacocks, which are protected under the Andaman administration. They live inside a reserved area filled with large tropical trees including coconuts and palms. Also, they can come out of the reserve to play around with visitors. Feeding or harming animals in any way is strictly prohibited here. If you are an animal lover and want to have a close encounter with them, then you should definitely visit this place.

Now, these caves are abandoned as they have run out of their purpose. At present, they act as a display of outstanding skills, effort and hardships faced by Indian workers in making them. The crucial offices and constructions throughout the island are connected by theses caves that follow several joint paths. If you decide to explore them, then you will be presented with a very mysterious vibe. In order to ensure safety and swift return and to avoid any complications that may occur, it is highly recommended that you visit there with a guide with you.

There were clouds of ash, and red lava fountains were ejecting from the crater. The hot lava flowed streaming down its slopes. But there is absolutely nothing to worry about as this is nothing new at all when we talk about Barren Island. It is predicted to erupt at least five times over the next 100 years. The first record of the volcano’s eruption dates back to 1787. In the year 1991, there was an eruption and the smoke billowed out for about six months. Since then, there have been eruptions every two-three years. It erupted in February 2016 as well.

All these eruptions lie at the lowest level of the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI). On the basis of the quantity of volcanic material spewed and its strength, the index ranks the volcanoes on a scale from 1-8. The last eruption that took place in 2017 was recorded as a 2 on the index which is much in the safe limits.

Things you should know about Barren Island

A remote island in the Andaman Sea, Barren Island is popularly known for housing the only confirmed active volcano in the area of South Asia. It is situated at a distance of 138 kilometers from Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This volcano forms a part of the chain of volcanoes that is found along the belt of Sumatra till Myanmar. In 1787, the first-ever eruption was recorded here.

Barren Island volcano has been known to erupt ten times since its first eruption. Last time, there was an eruption in 2017. The years 1789, 1795, 1803-1804, and 1852 have recorded eruptions. The eruption that took place in 1991 after nearly 50 years of dormancy became the focus of a lot of scientific researches and discussions. The eruption caused a lot of damage to flora and fauna all around as it continued for a few months.

As evident from the name, Barren Island is a barren or deserted area and is not inhabited by human beings. But the island is home to a small-size goat population along with bats, birds, and rodents that have managed to survive in the extremely tough conditions.

As the island is one of the restricted-entry areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Archipelago, you are required to take special permits for visit from the local authorities. Make sure that you procure the permit if you have decided to visit this island. No night stay is permitted there. You have to plan early morning expeditions to the vicinity of the island in boats, chartered cruises and ships and take a look at the island from a distance.

After obtaining the necessary permits and making the needed arrangements, special game fishing activity, snorkeling or scuba diving expeditions can be conducted under the guidance of expert, licensed and trained professionals. These adventurous activities are extremely engaging and may take six to eight hours of your expedition time. So you need to plan everything in advance. Havelock Island-based scuba divers can be engaged to escort you during a Barren Island water exploration trip.

The island vicinity will leave you awestruck by the diversity of flora and fauna. The excursion to this island is definitely going to be worthwhile when you will witness the interesting rock or basaltic formations, the variegated topography caused by the previous lava flows, and the lively coral gardens.

The volcano island was recently in news for being active, spewing a lot of lava and ash. A team of scientists belonging to the National Institute of Oceanography from Goa visited there. These scientists rested all apprehensions calling the fulmination of the volcano to be benign. The short eruptions lasted from five to ten minutes. Ash clouds were spumed in the daytime while red hot lava fountains were ejected from the crater after sunset. Scientists have recovered black pyroclastic material like coal after sampling the sediments. For ascertaining the ecological impact of volcanic activity, repeated scientific expeditions were planned.

Barren Island is nearly three kilometers wide and has a crater measuring two kilometers having walls surrounding it as high as 250-350 meters high. For the last recorded eruption, the Explosivity Index was two on a scale of 1 to 8, which is rather low. The eruption of 1991 reduced the number of animal and bird species as it was proved catastrophic.

You can view Barren Island through an aerial view by embarking on a Sea Plane from Port Blair. The tickets are quite expensive though. The service of these Barren Island Sorties is available on an on-demand basis. Per sortie can accommodate as many as seven passengers. But those who end up here are surprised with innumerable natural marvels. You can enjoy here amidst serene beaches (some with volcanic rocks and others with pristine sand) that are perfect for turtle nesting during the season (December and January). Mangrove sanctuaries and awareness centres with the longest walking trails are also here. And if that is not enough for you, then you can also visit a beautiful waterfall and wander around vast plantations of spices after the monsoon season.

  • Long fabled amongst explorers for its exquisite beaches, underwater spectacles and primaeval location in the middle of nowhere, ever wondered about the chronicle of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands? The history of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands traces back to the Ramayana period. In the Ramayana period, it was called Hanuman or Handuman, with years passing by this place was renamed. Travellers from different parts of the world visited this place. History shows that Arab Travellers visited Andamans Islands in the 19th Century, Marco Polo visited in the 13th century who describes this place as Angamanian, Friar Odoric in 14th Century, Caesar Fredericke in 16th Century.

Located on the trade routes from India to East Asia, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands groups were well-known since the earliest times. The 7th-century Chinese Buddhist monk I-ching, the Arab travellers of the 9th century, and Marco Polo (c. 1254–1324) are among those who mentioned the islands. The name Andaman is believed to be derived from the name of the monkey god of Hindu mythology, Hanuman and Nicobar are traced back to the Tamil word nakkavaram ("land of the naked") by the historians.

The population of the region was substantially changed by the settlement of convicts from the mainland and of numerous refugees, primarily from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh Japanese forces occupied both the Andaman and Nicobar Islands groups during World War II (1942-1945). The British abolished the penal colony in the Andamans after recapturing the islands. Then, the administration of the Andamans and Nicobar Islands was passed onto independent India in 1947. In 1979, the Andaman Cellular Jail was declared a national monument.

Often coined as "A slice of Paradise ”, Andaman Islands is not just another destination BUT is a crosscut to a landscape that is a slice of solitude on Earth. Boasting of some of the most iconic landmarks combined with the poetic panorama of nature with scenic beauty is so eye-captivating that it lures travellers from all around the world. Andaman’s history is as fascinating as its beaches. It is an honour and privilege for us to introduce you to some of the most interesting facts about this island which have been compiled from multiple sources-

    Prehistoric Andaman:

Some genetic studies suggest that the Andamanese were isolated from other populations over 30,000 years ago. The earliest archaeological evidence, however, dates back to some 2200 years.

    Indigenous Language:

When the Nicobarese people were first discovered by Europeans, they used to speak Moh-Khmer and Shompen languages which were unrelated to Andamanese. Instead, these languages are closer to Austroasiatic languages.

    Island Without A Name:

Circa 1440, Italian traveller Niccolo de Conti mentioned the islands and said that the name means ‘Island of Gold’. Could it be, we wonder? History buffs and enthusiasts often wonder if there is a hidden national treasure on the islands? The popular belief remains that the islands got its name from the ancient Indian God, Hanuman (Sanskrit form Andaman).

    Myths and Sagas:

In the book titled “Book of Wonders” which was produced in Paris, (France) during the early 15th century, it was depicted that the Andaman Islands were inhabited by wolf-headed people! These false claims can be traced back to the inaccessibility of islands during that time.

    Barter That Changed The Geography:

Originally, Andamans was a part of Burma. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru traded this island with the Burmese people in exchange for two districts of Manipur. Now Imagine how different historical facts about Andaman would have turned out to be, had this one incident not happened!

    Wars:

As customary to most of the civilizations around the world- early days of Andamans also saw a struggle between ‘outsiders’ and islanders. One of the most famous being the ‘Battle of Aberdeen’ fought between the Andamanese tribe and the British on May 17, 1859. To commemorate the local tribesmen who lost their lives, a memorial has been built at the Andaman Water Sports Complex.

    A Blood Stained History:

Andaman and Nicobar Islands were occupied by Japan for three years during World War II. The takeover came as a result of Indian revolutionaries joining hands with the Japanese to create a stronghold against the Britishers. The Japanese landed at South Andaman on March 23, 1942. They soon took over the islands and freed the inmates of the cellular jail who were asked to join the Indian National Army. Most of them joined too. These revolutionaries, headed by Dr Subash Chandra Bose, convinced the Japanese to give the islands back to India. They then hoisted the Indian flag here on December 30, 1943, and named the islands Shared Swaraj. But all did not remain well. The atrocities of the Japanese on the Indians was nothing short of the barbarity that happened during holocaust, but they are not spoken about as much. Over 2000 Indians died during this period before the British recaptured the islands in 1945. Rumour has it that the Japanese made a secret tunnel connecting Ross Island to Port Blair, though it has not been discovered till date.

    World War II:

During World War II, the islands were under Japanese control, only nominally under the authority of the Azad Hind Fauz of Subhash Chandra Bose. He visited the islands during the war and renamed them as "Shaheed-Dweep" (Martyr Island) and "Swaraj-dweep" (Self-rule Island). On February 22, 1944, General Loganathan of the Indian National Army was made the Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On March 21, 1944, the Headquarters of the Civil Administration was established near the gurdwara at Aberdeen Bazaar. On October 2, 1944, Col. Loganathan handed over the charge to Maj. Alvi left Port Blair, never to return. Japanese Vice Admiral Hara Teizo and Major-General Tamenori Sato surrendered the islands on October 7, 1945, in a ceremony performed on the Gymkhana Ground, Port Blair.

    Dark Chapter of Cellular Jail:

Perhaps the most painful historical fact about Andaman is the history behind cellular jail, which was built to keep political prisoners who were India’s freedom fighters. The island was often popularised by the people as ‘Kala Pani’ or black waters. Thousands of prisoners were tortured and killed in jail. The jail today stands as one of the most visited landmarks by the tourists who come to the islands.

    A New Beginning:

Andaman eventually became a part of India in 1950, despite the announced intention of the British Government to resettle all native Anglo-Indians and Anglo-Burmese on these islands to form their separate nation. Andaman was declared a Union Territory of the nation in 1956. Since the 1980s, it has also become a hub for Indian defence services to develop various facilities, serving a crucial position in India's strategic role in the Bay of Bengal and the Malacca Strait.

    The Tsunami of 2004:

December 26, 2004, is remembered as a Black day in the minds of many natives of these islands. At around 8 AM, The coasts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were devastated by a 10 m (33 ft) high tsunami following an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. The number of people that lost their lives exceeded 2000, roughly 4000 children were orphaned or bore the loss of one parent, at least 40,000 people lost their homes overnight, and More than 46,000 people were injured. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami or Christmas Tsunami, caused fatalities among a large number of tourists because of the holiday season. Luckily, many of the aboriginal tribes were able to escape because of the traditions that were passed down telling them to evacuate from large waves that followed big earthquakes.

    The Island Seismology:

All of Andaman and Nicobar Isalnds lie in a Zone V seismic hazard. The islands are prone to both earthquakes and tsunamis. A tectonic process called ‘SeaFloor Spreading’ has resulted in the constant widening of the Andaman Sea. The Indian plate is diving beneath the Burmese microplate due to a process called ‘Subduction’. There have been hundreds of small earthquakes hitting the islands from time to time and continue to do so.

    The Active Volcano:

Andaman is considered to be the home to the only lava volcano found in the South Asia region. Barren Island’s volcano’s first recorded eruption was in 1787. The volcano has erupted 10 times since then, the latest in February 2017. Due to the volcano, the sea around the islands is very potent for scuba diving.

    Renaming Ceremony:

Marking the 75th anniversary of the flag hoisting by Subhash Chandra Bose, in December 2018, current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, renamed three of the islands as a tribute. Ross Island, Neil Island and Havelock Island became Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep, Shaheed Dweep, and Swaraj Dweep respectively.

    History At a Glance :

    • Ross Island was an erstwhile headquarter for the British as well as the Japanese.
    • The most widely spoken language on the islands is neither Andamanese nor Nicobarese, but Bengali followed by Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.

This landscape paints quite a different picture from the bustling life of tourists in islands, showcasing the quiet life of the islanders. The stretch of the road that leads to the Kala Pathar Beach is undulant. Though the beach tends to get a bit crowded in the tourist season, yet if one walks further to the south they can get to the clutter-free zones that are still and serene without much tourist action taking place.

A forsaken island with a beautiful and alluring ambience is ideal for anyone who just wants to get away from the hum-drum of the world, sit by a tree, and relax on the beach. Best to visit as a stopover attraction, Kala Pathar beach is a place with no one around, most of the time. The best time to visit the beach is spring to soak in the beautiful stretch of white sand in contrast to the black rocks and perfect sync with the glimmering ocean. Spring is when everything appears greener and better, the perfect season to explore Havelock's crowned jewel, Kala Pathar. • The weather is warm, the days are long, and flowers are in full bloom, summer truly is a magical time of the year. After saying yes to the love of your life, you might be in the process of finalising a wedding date. But it doesn’t just stop there. Does it? You have yet to decide upon the shenanigans. Right from the decor to the cuisine served, there’s a lot that needs your attention while planning a wedding. Summer weddings have their charm, and we are here to bring you up to speed. What if we tell you that we have some fun and easy ideas that will make your wedding, unique, interesting, and a picture-perfect affair? Unconventional is the new conventional. Destination weddings are just another trend that became a norm after grabbing attention for their intimate and memorable take on weddings. So, let us begin at the beginning.

    1. Take Vows At A ‘Cool’ Destination

Summers are a perfect time to sip on a pina colada while sunbathing on a beach. Well, imagine a beach wedding, under the shade of palm trees, and the perfect sound of the waves crashing against the shore, leaving little shells behind. Summer weddings can be a sultry affair when you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. With the right venue in hand, to get hitched and lo and behold, your summer wedding might just become a tale of its times. Though the first destination that pops in anyone’s head at the mention of the beach, is Goa, here is another place that is just right for a summer wedding. We agreed to take the unconventional route, did we not? Andamans in all its glory, with its exotic backdrop, crystal clear waters and famed beaches can be ideal for your D-day. A treasure trove of exquisite vistas, Andaman is full of things that can make you go gaga. Don’t you want a wedding that is as incredible and unique as you? Well, what better way to ensure that by deciding to take vows at a place we would like to call 'a little slice of paradise'! As songwriter Van Morrison says and we quote, "Smell the sea, and feel the sky. Let your soul and spirit fly."

    2. Turn Your Outdoor Function Into A Pool Party!

An Indian wedding hardly is what you call a day’s affair. Unlike English weddings, our celebration lasts up to three to four days; to say the least. One of the days hosts functions for either Haldi or Mehndi or both combined. The best way to have an outdoor day-function in summers and literally not get fried in the heat is to turn it into a pool party. Summers are yet another chance of plunging into the waters and taking a chill pill. What better way to celebrate your Mehndi or Haldi, dancing to the pop chartbusters while playing in the pool with your friends and cousins? The photos during the function will definitely give out some major Bollywood vibes! It sure is a way to notch things up a little. With a poolside bar and a DJ on board, the guests are going to love it. And, so are you!

    3. Take your cocktail party on a cruise!

While some wedding ceremonies revolve around the family, some functions are a treat, especially for your friends and cousins. A cocktail or an engagement party sounds like one of them. What can your cocktail party have in common with some dope Bollywood party songs, other than the drinks and glamour? Well, how do you like the idea of a cocktail cruise party? Andamans is a delight in summer. Owing to the star-studded night sky, the ocean below transforms into a shimmering sea of stars. With a live DJ, cocktails, mocktails, seafood cuisine, and your guests on board, the cruise will be ready to set sail in the evening. Put your dancing shoes on and swing to the tunes of your favourite dance number! Your close ones, a cruise, a celebration, hmm, where have we heard a song for that? Hint Hint, our pick for the same has to be, Gallan Goodiyan! What do you say?

    4. Choose a unique theme!

Theme plays the most crucial role in a wedding. Choose breezy and fresh summer hues for the decor. The flowers can be arranged according to the season, adding a touch of summer in the ambience. You can also play around the idea of shells and sand while sending out the wedding invitation. Basically, you can experiment a whole lot with the theme and colours. While the attire most couples go with for a wedding is traditional, that doesn’t mean you can’t try different outfits for other functions. Experiment with breezy, flowy, breathable fabric and style. Remember, the backdrop is exotic on its own, and the right theme in hand might just accentuate everything.

    5. Try your hand at water activities

Andamans and adventure go hand in hand. When the wedding preparations get a little overwhelming at times, there is no harm in letting go for a while and taking in your surroundings (we mean nature and not the chatter) to feel at ease. Even the guests might find themselves looking for ways to blow off some steam. What better way to this, than by indulging in a little aqua adventure? The vast ocean seduces you to take a dip and traverse the world of corals and fishes underwater. On your visit to Andamans, you have snorkelling, scuba diving, parasailing, undersea walking, speed boating, and kayaking at your fingertips. Might we also recommend an underwater photo shoot for the couple? You are welcome.
