    • Friar Odoric in the 14th Century
    • Caesar Fredericke in the 16th Century.

    Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Located on the trade routes from India to East Asia, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been well-known since the earliest times. The 7th-century Chinese Buddhist monk I-ching, the Arab travellers of the 9th century, and Marco Polo (c. 1254–1324) are among those who mentioned the islands. The name Andaman is believed to be derived from the name of the monkey god of Hindu mythology, Hanuman, and Nicobar is traced back to the Tamil word Nakkavaram ("land of the naked") by historians.

The population of the region was substantially changed by the settlement of convicts from the mainland and of numerous refugees, primarily from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh Japanese forces occupied both the Andaman and Nicobar Islands groups during World War II (1942-1945). The British abolished the penal colony in the Andamans after recapturing the islands. Then, the administration of the Andamans and Nicobar Islands was passed onto independent India in 1947. In 1979, the Andaman Cellular Jail was declared a national monument.

Often coined as "A slice of Paradise”, the Andaman Islands are not just another destination, but are a crosscut to a landscape that is a slice of solitude on Earth. Boasting some of the most iconic landmarks combined with the poetic panorama of nature, with scenic beauty, is so eye-catching that it lures travellers from all around the world. Andaman’s history is as fascinating as its beaches. It is an honour and a privilege for us to introduce you to some of the most interesting facts about this island, which have been compiled from multiple sources.

    Prehistoric Andaman

Some genetic studies suggest that the Andamanese were isolated from other populations over 30,000 years ago. The earliest archaeological evidence, however, dates back to some 2200 years.

    Indigenous Language

When the Nicobarese people were first discovered by Europeans, they used to speak the Moh-Khmer and Shompen languages, which were unrelated to Andamanese. Instead, these languages are closer to Austroasiatic languages.

    Island Without A Name

Circa 1440, Italian traveller Niccolo de Conti mentioned the islands and said that the name means ‘Island of Gold’. Could it be, we wonder? History buffs and enthusiasts often wonder if there is a hidden national treasure on the islands. The popular belief remains that the islands got their name from the ancient Indian God, Hanuman (Sanskrit form Andaman).

    Myths and Sagas

In the book titled “Book of Wonders,” which was produced in Paris, France, during the early 15th century, it was depicted that the Andaman Islands were inhabited by wolf-headed people! These false claims can be traced back to the inaccessibility of islands during that time.

    Barter That Changed The Geography

Originally, the Andamans were a part of Burma. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru traded this island with the Burmese people in exchange for two districts of Manipur. Now imagine how different historical facts about the Andaman would have turned out to be, had this one incident not happened.

    Wars

As customary in most civilizations around the world, the early days of the Andamans also saw a struggle between ‘outsiders’ and islanders. One of the most famous battles was the ‘Battle of Aberdeen’ fought between the Andamanese tribe and the British on May 17, 1859. To commemorate the local tribesmen who lost their lives, a memorial has been built at the Andaman Water Sports Complex.

    A Blood Stained History

Andaman and Nicobar Islands were occupied by Japan for three years during World War II. The takeover came as a result of Indian revolutionaries joining hands with the Japanese to create a stronghold against the British. The Japanese landed at South Andaman on March 23, 1942. They soon took over the islands and freed the inmates of the cellular jail who were asked to join the Indian National Army.

    • Most of them joined too.
    • These revolutionaries, headed by Dr Subash Chandra Bose, convinced the Japanese to give the islands back to India.
    • They then hoisted the Indian flag here on December 30, 1943, and named the islands Shared Swaraj. But all did not remain well.
    • The atrocities of the Japanese on the Indians were nothing short of the barbarity that happened during the holocaust, but they are not spoken about as much.
    • Over 2000 Indians died during this period before the British recaptured the islands in 1945. Rumour has it that the Japanese made a secret tunnel connecting Ross Island to Port Blair, though it has not been discovered to date.

    World War II:

During World War II, the islands were under Japanese control, only nominally under the authority of the Azad Hind Fauz of Subhash Chandra Bose. He visited the islands during the war and renamed them as "Shaheed-Dweep" (Martyr Island) and "Swaraj-Dweep" (Self-rule Island). On February 22, 1944, General Loganathan of the Indian National Army was made the Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On March 21, 1944, the Headquarters of the Civil Administration was established near the gurdwara at Aberdeen Bazaar.

    On October 2, 1944-

    • Col. Loganathan handed over the charge to Maj.
    • Alvi left Port Blair, never to return.
    • Japanese Vice Admiral Hara Teizo and Major-General Tamenori Sato surrendered the islands on October 7, 1945, in a ceremony performed on the Gymkhana Ground, Port Blair.

    Dark Chapter of Cellular Jail

    Cellular Jail

Perhaps the most painful historical fact about Andaman is the history behind Cellular Jail, which was built to keep political prisoners who were India’s freedom fighters. The island was often popularised by the people as ‘Kala Pani’ or black waters. Thousands of prisoners were tortured and killed in jail. The jail today stands as one of the most visited landmarks by tourists who come to the islands.

    A New Beginning

Andaman eventually became a part of India in 1950, despite the announced intention of the British Government to resettle all native Anglo-Indians and Anglo-Burmese on these islands to form their separate nation. Andaman was declared a Union Territory of the nation in 1956. Since the 1980s, it has also become a hub for Indian defence services to develop various facilities, serving a crucial position in India's strategic role in the Bay of Bengal and the Malacca Strait.

    The Tsunami of 2004

December 26, 2004, is remembered as a Black day in the minds of many natives of these islands. At around 8 AM, the coasts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were devastated by a 10 m (33 ft) high tsunami following an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. The number of people that lost their lives exceeded 2000, roughly 4000 children were orphaned or bore the loss of one parent, at least 40,000 people lost their homes overnight, and More than 46,000 people were injured.

The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, or Christmas Tsunami, caused fatalities among a large number of tourists because of the holiday season. Luckily, many of the aboriginal tribes were able to escape because of the traditions that were passed down telling them to evacuate from large waves that followed big earthquakes.

    The Island Seismology

All of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie in a Zone V seismic hazard. The islands are prone to both earthquakes and tsunamis. A tectonic process called ‘SeaFloor Spreading’ has resulted in the constant widening of the Andaman Sea. The Indian plate is diving beneath the Burmese microplate due to a process called ‘Subduction’. There have been hundreds of small earthquakes hitting the islands from time to time, and they continue to do so.

    The Active Volcano

Andaman is considered to be the home to the only lava volcano found in the South Asia region. Barren Island’s volcano’s first recorded eruption was in 1787. The volcano has erupted 10 times since then, the latest in February 2017. Due to the volcano, the sea around the islands is very potent for scuba diving.

    Renaming Ceremony

Marking the 75th anniversary of the flag hoisting by Subhash Chandra Bose, in December 2018, current Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed three of the islands as a tribute. Ross Island, Neil Island, and Havelock Island became Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep, Shaheed Dweep, and Swaraj Dweep, respectively.

    History At a Glance :

    • Ross Island was an erstwhile headquarters for the British as well as the Japanese.
    • The most widely spoken language on the islands is neither Andamanese nor Nicobarese, but Bengali, followed by Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam.
    • The largest sea turtles in the world, Leatherback (Dermochelys Coriacea), nest here.
    • North Sentinel Island is home to the Sentinelese tribe, one of the most isolated Paleolithic tribes of the world.
    • The 20 Rupee currency note depicts the picturesque North Bay Island, as seen on the way to Mount Harriet, the second-highest peak of the archipelago.

  • Ever since provisions around permit for the Andamans eased in 2018, the travel scene in the island has been in full swing. Veer Savarkar International airport in Port Blair connects Andaman archipelago to all major cities of India. The airport is roughly at a distance of 5 kilometres from the city centre. Far from the mainland yet closer to the capital city, Havelock Island lies roughly 70 kilometres from Port Blair. Although one might discover a different side of Havelock Island in almost every season, to experience Havelock Island at its best, most travellers flock to the island from October to April.

Owing to its geographical position, Havelock Island remains a detached island, meaning that there are no roads that connect it to other islands, making sea route the only viable mode of transport. The sea voyage to the island takes less than 2 hours. As of 2019, SeaPlane does not operate on the island and travellers have the option to choose between government/private ferries. Island transfers are different from land transfers. Rule number one has to be, always book your tickets beforehand to avoid any last-minute shenanigans.

    Government Ferry:

The lifeline of Andaman Islands, Government Ferry is the most pocket-friendly, and the easiest available means how to reach Havelock Island. The trip takes nearly 2.5 hours and works around a fixed schedule. The ferries depart at ?6 A.M (2.5-hour voyage), 11 A.M (4-hour journey via Neil Island) and 2 P.M (2.5-hour voyage). All ferries leave from the Phoenix Bay Jetty in Port Blair, a small, bustling wharf with shallow waters. While availing government ferries, remember to book the tickets as early as possible. The tickets usually sell-out pretty fast as it is commonly used by locals for their inter-island transport and is therefore subject to availability. Once you have boarded the ferry, take a walk outside your cabin and savour the crisp blow of air and cerulean waters around you.

    Private Cruise/Ferries:

Another way to go about the journey from Port Blair to Havelock Island is via private ferries. Ideal for travellers, these ferries offer luxury travel at a standard price and assures a comfortable experience. A tad expensive than the government-operated ferries, cruises travel faster and take relatively less time. The most reliable operators for cruise boats are Makruzz and Green Ocean and deliver a premium in-cabin experience. While Makruzz takes 90 minutes to reach Havelock Island, Green Ocean takes 120 minutes to make the journey. They run on time, are tidy, well organized, and have staff on board to assist you in case of emergency. The availability depends upon the season you're visiting in, i.e. low in peak seasons and high availability during the off-season. Either you can book tickets via the ground offices of the respective operators, or online through their portal. We would still recommend booking well in advance to ensure a hassle-free experience.

    Air:

Helicopters are undeniably an extravagant, yet another means to travel from the capital city to Havelock island. Initially commenced by Jal Hans, the first flight of the 10-seater helicopter was from Port Blair to Havelock. The panoramic aerial view of the islands is enthralling, and the journey in itself is exhilarating. The services though open for both tourists and Islanders, are quite hard to avail. Owing to the set priority list, tourists often find themselves at the bottom of the waiting list.

There are certain things to keep in mind -
    1. Avoid travelling in turbulent weather. Due to bad weather conditions, ferry often gets cancelled by the authorities.
    2. Remember to carry valid ID proof. While checking-into the ferry, an ID card is a must.
    3. Ferry timings often change owing to the weather, so it is advisable to keep an eye on the chart.
    4. Book well in advance. Availability is dynamic, and tickets often sell out.

    Getting Around:

Getting around on an island is different from traversing a city. The local transport in Havelock Island is relatively simple and easy to use. The villages have their own beaches, those beaches have numbers assigned to their names, and the roads are set straight without any traffic. There is hardly any scope to lose your directions, but when it does happen, locals are happy to help.

Taxis - Tourists can rent taxis from Havelock jetty for interisland travel. These tend to work best for travellers who travel in a schedule and are up for saving time more than money. However, be wary of the drivers that are bound to overcharge you, where you might have to bargain your way out. If you book a package for Andaman excursion, taxis will be taken care of along with the rest of the transport.

Bike rentals - Renting a bike on an island and riding into the sunset is what travel goals exude. An easy and cost-effective local means of transport in Havelock Island is by renting a motorcycle, scooter or a bicycle. Travellers usually hire them on an everyday basis for a minimal amount and set off to explore the island on their own. Monsoon seasons are risky, and we would not recommend renting a bike then, as the roads become slippery, which can prove dangerous.

Auto rickshaws - Tuk-tuks or auto rickshaws are probably India's favourite mode of local transport. They are cost-effective and readily available. You can hail them during the day on one of the main roads or at the marketplace. A short trip might cost you around INR 50 to 200, and a long ride, say Radhanagar Beach might cost you around INR 700 to 1000. The prices are standardized, though that does not stop travellers from bargaining.

Public Transport - Backpackers or budget travellers can also opt for shared jeeps and government buses to commute within the island.

Walking, however, remains one of the most common means of transport. It is the best way to explore a destination, and there is no denying that. If your energy and time permits you, we suggest you tie your shoelaces and go for a long walk to the beach.

  • Sea walking is the most exclusive and unique water activity as in India, it can only be done in the Andaman Islands. The best thing about it is that it can be done by people of all age groups and with anyone- family, partner, or alone. Andaman Nightlife Overview: What Evenings Really Feel Like

The Andaman Islands turn calm and cinematic after sunset. Street noise fades, and the ocean takes over the soundtrack. Warm air, salt in the breeze, and starlight create a relaxed frame for social nights.

This is not a city-style party grid. It is a string of beach clubs, rooftop lounges, and mellow cafés. People talk more, dance on sand, and slow down without getting bored. The vibe blends nature, music, and good food in equal parts.

Your earlier content touched on parties and beach cafés. This extension covers a wider area across Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The goal is clarity without hype. Expect DJ nights at the shore, acoustic sets on rooftops, and relaxed bars with island classics. Havelock nightlife is centered around its open-air bars and relaxed beach clubs, where music, cocktails, and starlit skies set the mood.

Expect menus featuring seafood and grills, accompanied by mocktails and tropical pairings. Expect safety, walkability near hubs, and resort curfews that keep it tasteful. The result is unhurried nights that still feel special.

    • Island evenings are relaxed but social.
    • Music shifts from acoustic to DJ by location.
    • Beach venues prioritize vibe over volume.
    • Menus lean toward seafood and grills.
    • Nights usually wind down without chaos.

Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) Nights: Beach Clubs and Chill Cafés

Havelock remains the island for sand-under-feet nights. Your source text centers the nightlife here, so this continues in the same line. Nemo Café & Bar sits right by the beach. It delivers DJ sets with a sea breeze. Lighting is warm and minimal.

Music lines up with the tide, not traffic. Full Moon Café goes the opposite way. It keeps the volume low and the seating cozy. Food comes out steadily. Service is patient, not rushed. Bonova Café & Pub adds color and DJ nights with a modern interior.

Havelock is spread across beach numbers. That makes venue planning useful. Beach No. 2 brings the club vibe close to many stays. Beach No. 3 leans tranquil and dinner-ready. Beach No. 5 mixes both for guests who want options in a short ride. You can stack a mellow dinner first and a beach party later. Or stay with one tone and call it a night. Cabs and resort transfers help keep it simple.

    • Nemo Café & Bar anchors beachfront DJ nights.
    • Full Moon Café encourages relaxed dinners and soothing music.
    • Bonova adds DJ color in a modern room.
    • Beach numbers help plan distances.
    • Transfers keep late returns straightforward.

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) Evenings: Quiet, Cozy, Authentic

Neil Island keeps nights small on purpose. It protects the mood that people come to find. Neil Island nightlife is quieter compared to Port Blair and Havelock, making it ideal for couples and families who prefer peaceful evenings. Fat Martin’s Café brings guitar vibes and casual meals. The team knows regulars by name.

Plates read like a traveler’s notebook: comfort food, island twists, and a few sweet staples. This is the place to end an active day. Talk with friends and share plates. Sit longer than you planned. No one will rush you.

Beachfront after-dinner walks are common on Neil. Sound travels easily in the quiet, so venues keep volumes polite. That makes it great for couples and families who want to be out, not loud.

The island finishes early compared to Port Blair. This is not a drawback. It lets you rest for sunrise plans. It also keeps the air and sound clean at night. Expect dim paths, star fields, and a sky that actually glows.

    • Neil favors quiet cafés over clubs.
    • Fat Martin’s blends comfort food and music.
    • Evenings close earlier by design.
    • Beach walks are the default night plan
    • Dark skies reward stargazers often.

Signature Night Experiences: Stargazing, Bonfires, Bioluminescence

Nights in the Andamans are built by nature first. Stargazing runs strong across Chidiyatapu, quiet corners of Havelock, and open sands on Neil. Light pollution is low, so you can trace constellations with the naked eye. Bonfires appear at select beach fronts under staff watch. They stay small, clean, and respectful of the wind. This style suits groups who like a steady beat and clear talk. It keeps the sand warm without turning the shore into a stadium.

Bioluminescence can appear in certain lagoons and mangrove belts. On good nights with the right tides, paddles leave light trails. Guides run small-group kayaking after dusk when conditions allow. This is not a guaranteed nightly show, but when it happens, it stays with you. It is quiet, safe with trained leads, and deeply photogenic without flash. Layer this with an early dinner and a short walk back, and you get a night that feels like a memory already.

Beach parties in Andaman usually happen around resorts and full-moon nights, offering bonfires, acoustic sessions, and late-night gatherings by the sea.

    • Stargazing thrives where lights are few
    • Bonfires are staff-supervised and wind-aware.
    • Bioluminescence depends on the tide and darkness.
    • Small groups keep night kayaking calm.
    • Early dinners pair well with nature nights.

Planning Smart: Safety, Transport, Timings, and Local Etiquette

Nights go smoothly with simple planning. Book resort transfers when venues are beachside. Keep cash for small purchases on Neil and Havelock. Mobile data can vary by patch; download maps for the ride back. Many resort bars close tidy and on time. This keeps beaches quiet and safe. Plan one “loud” night and one “soft” night. It balances energy and rest across a short trip.

Etiquette matters on islands with living reefs and guarded shores. Keep music volumes contained on public sands. Carry cups back to bars. Do not light private fires without staff permission. Dress codes are relaxed, but beach clubs still prefer neat casuals after dark. Tip bands and servers for live sets. It keeps the cultural loop healthy. The islands respond well to guests who treat them like home.

    • Pre-book transfers for late returns.
    • Keep cash for small-island buys.
    • Respect quiet hours on public beaches.
    • Follow staff guidance for fires and lights.
    • Tip musicians and servers when you can.

Curated Night Routes: 2–4 Hour Itineraries by Island

Short, focused routes make Andaman nights efficient. In Port Blair, begin with a hilltop sunset and move to a rooftop dinner. Add a lounge drink or a dance set only if the energy fits. In Havelock, pair a beachfront dinner with a DJ night on the same shore. Avoid long, late transfers. On Neil, keep it café-centric with a slow meal and a beach walk. The key is not rushing. The islands reward patience.

Route design respects distances and beach numbers. It uses places you already mentioned, so readers find the same map on the ground. It also reads like direct help, not guesses. The best night plan is the one that you can finish without a scramble. If your day was full of water sports, pick a mellow end. If your day was light, add a club set. Keep shoes simple and pockets light. That is island logic.

    • Build nights around one beach zone.
    • Add one anchor venue and one add-on.
    • Keep transfers short and pre-booked.
    • Match night energy to day fatigue.
    • Shoes and pockets: keep it light.

Live Music, DJs, and Themes: What Plays Where

Music is curated by space and audience. Rooftops in Port Blair lean towards acoustic and soft vocals. They keep the skyline in the frame. Lounges use classic lists and clean pours. Dance nights push energy at Pink Fly and the beach DJ decks in Havelock. Nemo’s night balance lets dancers move while seated groups still talk. Theme nights refresh repeat visits. Retro sets, Bollywood, and world beats rotate without becoming noise.

Live sets matter to island rhythm. Bands keep volume reasonable to hold the sea’s presence. You hear the waves between songs. That is not a bug; that is the brand. Venues use lighting and spacing to avoid sharp echoes. It protects conversations and keeps the sand friendly. Musicians get room to breathe. Guests get a night that is both alive and gentle.

    • Rooftops, acoustic, and skyline.
    • Lounges, classics, and clean pours.
    • Beach DJs dance with the sea breeze.
    • Theme nights rotate; avoid repetition.
    • Sound design keeps sand comfortable.

Late-Night Eats: Seafood, Grills, and Island Flavors

Late-night food in Andaman is limited but rewarding, with Port Blair offering the best range of seafood grills, tandoor bites, and quick snacks past midnight. Menus after dark lean toward fish, prawns, and grills. Chefs keep spices moderate for comfort at night. Sides run with coconut rice, wedges, and salads. Full Moon focuses on plated dinners.

Nemo carries bar bites and mains for party arcs. Bonova mixes snacks with a full bar list. Port Blair rooftops serve tidy seafood formats with desserts to close. Neil cafés favor comfort plates and slow service, by design.

Quality comes from freshness and pacing. Staff plate in waves so groups can share easily. Vegetarians find grills and island curries with seasonal sides. Mocktails use tropical fruit without heavy sugar. Water and simple coolers sit next to cocktail lists. People feel looked after without losing the night’s tone. That is why guests go back the next evening.

    • Seafood is central after dark.
    • Grills and salads balance plates.
    • Bar bites keep pace with DJ sets.
    • Mocktails use tropical fruit cleanly.
    • Service cadence suits group sharing.

Budget vs Premium Nights: How to Spend Smart

Andaman nights scale well. You can keep it modest and social without losing experience. Or you can go premium and add decor, service flow, and bespoke touches. In Port Blair, rooftops sit in the middle and feel worth it. In Havelock, beach clubs can stretch your spending when you add a bottle and long hours. On Neil, cafés sit lower by intent. None of this is guesswork; it follows the setups you already referenced and how island nights operate.

The smart move is to pick what the night needs. If the day was heavy on activities, choose a mid-budget dinner and call it. If you are celebrating, add a premium table with a reserved cabana. Spend on the element that will change the night the most: location, music, or service pace. Do not stack all at once.

The island favors focus. Andaman nightlife costs vary: budget travelers can enjoy street snacks and live music for under ?500, while upscale venues may charge ?3000+ for cocktails and fine dining.

    • Scale spend by mood, not ego.
    • Rooftops sit mid and feel right.
    • Beach clubs scale with add-ons.
    • Neil cafés stay easy by design.
    • Spend on the one thing that matters.

Group, Couple, Solo: Tailored Night Plans

Groups do best with modular nights. Start with a café that can seat many. Move to a venue with easy dance space. Keep bills split by table early. Pick one person for transport checkouts. Couples do best with two-stop arcs. A quiet dinner first, then fifteen steps of music. Or reverse it for a mellow end.

Solo travelers should aim for friendly bars with clear sightlines and staff who remember faces. That is how you make a new place feel safe. Group tours in Andaman often include nightlife add-ons like DJ nights, while couples prefer private dinners, and solo travelers lean towards bars and live music spots.

All three profiles share the rule of proximity. Take the shortest paths between the two stops. Confirm closing patterns on arrival. Tip bands, thank staff, and leave with time to spare. Nights that end clean are the ones you want to repeat. The islands make this easy when you keep routes small.

    • Groups: modular, split bills early.
    • Couples: two-stop arcs, short walks.
    • Solo: friendly bars, clear sightlines.
    • Proximity is the rule of thumb.
    • Clean exits beat last-minute rushes.

Seasonality and Weather at Night: What Changes, What Stays

Island nights follow seasons gently. Peak months feel crisp and dry, so rooftops and beach decks shine. Off-peak brings wind shifts and the chance of a shower. Venues adapt with indoor-leaning setups and covered decks. Music still plays, just closer to the walls. The experience remains shared and warm. Staff adjust furniture to block gusts, and menus add hot plates and soups to keep customers warm.

Some constants hold; beach etiquette does not change. Transfers still matter, mocktails stay popular well past midnight. Stargazing improves after a squall, when the air is rinsed clear. And staff will keep telling you the same thing: tell us your plan when you arrive. They will watch the weather and guide you to the best sequence. That is the advantage of an island service culture.

You still get a night, just shaped a little differently. The best time to visit the Andaman Islands for nightlife is between November and March, when tourist numbers increase and more venues stay open late.

    • Peak months favor open decks.
    • Off-peak leans to covered spaces.
    • Staff adapt seating to wind lines.
    • Stargazing can improve post-shower.
    • Share your plan; let staff adjust it.
  • Do you want to go on a submarine ride in the magical depths of the Andamans? A highly thrilling adventure, you should indulge in this amazing experience while vacationing on the island. Witness the rich underwater marine life closely while sitting in the comforts of a semi-submarine. It will take you on an exciting ride above the multicolored corals and amid a plethora of unique fish.
