  • Long fabled amongst explorers for its exquisite beaches, underwater spectacles and primaeval location in the middle of nowhere, ever wondered about the chronicle of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands? The history of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands traces back to the Ramayana period. In the Ramayana period, it was called Hanuman or Handuman, with years passing by this place was renamed. Travellers from different parts of the world visited this place. History shows that Arab Travellers visited Andamans Islands in the 19th Century, Marco Polo visited in the 13th century who describes this place as Angamanian, Friar Odoric in 14th Century, Caesar Fredericke in 16th Century.

Located on the trade routes from India to East Asia, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands groups were well-known since the earliest times. The 7th-century Chinese Buddhist monk I-ching, the Arab travellers of the 9th century, and Marco Polo (c. 1254–1324) are among those who mentioned the islands. The name Andaman is believed to be derived from the name of the monkey god of Hindu mythology, Hanuman and Nicobar are traced back to the Tamil word nakkavaram ("land of the naked") by the historians.

The population of the region was substantially changed by the settlement of convicts from the mainland and of numerous refugees, primarily from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh Japanese forces occupied both the Andaman and Nicobar Islands groups during World War II (1942-1945). The British abolished the penal colony in the Andamans after recapturing the islands. Then, the administration of the Andamans and Nicobar Islands was passed onto independent India in 1947. In 1979, the Andaman Cellular Jail was declared a national monument.

Often coined as "A slice of Paradise ”, Andaman Islands is not just another destination BUT is a crosscut to a landscape that is a slice of solitude on Earth. Boasting of some of the most iconic landmarks combined with the poetic panorama of nature with scenic beauty is so eye-captivating that it lures travellers from all around the world. Andaman’s history is as fascinating as its beaches. It is an honour and privilege for us to introduce you to some of the most interesting facts about this island which have been compiled from multiple sources-

    Prehistoric Andaman:

Some genetic studies suggest that the Andamanese were isolated from other populations over 30,000 years ago. The earliest archaeological evidence, however, dates back to some 2200 years.

    Indigenous Language:

When the Nicobarese people were first discovered by Europeans, they used to speak Moh-Khmer and Shompen languages which were unrelated to Andamanese. Instead, these languages are closer to Austroasiatic languages.

    Island Without A Name:

Circa 1440, Italian traveller Niccolo de Conti mentioned the islands and said that the name means ‘Island of Gold’. Could it be, we wonder? History buffs and enthusiasts often wonder if there is a hidden national treasure on the islands? The popular belief remains that the islands got its name from the ancient Indian God, Hanuman (Sanskrit form Andaman).

    Myths and Sagas:

In the book titled “Book of Wonders” which was produced in Paris, (France) during the early 15th century, it was depicted that the Andaman Islands were inhabited by wolf-headed people! These false claims can be traced back to the inaccessibility of islands during that time.

    Barter That Changed The Geography:

Originally, Andamans was a part of Burma. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru traded this island with the Burmese people in exchange for two districts of Manipur. Now Imagine how different historical facts about Andaman would have turned out to be, had this one incident not happened!

    Wars:

As customary to most of the civilizations around the world- early days of Andamans also saw a struggle between ‘outsiders’ and islanders. One of the most famous being the ‘Battle of Aberdeen’ fought between the Andamanese tribe and the British on May 17, 1859. To commemorate the local tribesmen who lost their lives, a memorial has been built at the Andaman Water Sports Complex.

    A Blood Stained History:

Andaman and Nicobar Islands were occupied by Japan for three years during World War II. The takeover came as a result of Indian revolutionaries joining hands with the Japanese to create a stronghold against the Britishers. The Japanese landed at South Andaman on March 23, 1942. They soon took over the islands and freed the inmates of the cellular jail who were asked to join the Indian National Army. Most of them joined too. These revolutionaries, headed by Dr Subash Chandra Bose, convinced the Japanese to give the islands back to India. They then hoisted the Indian flag here on December 30, 1943, and named the islands Shared Swaraj. But all did not remain well. The atrocities of the Japanese on the Indians was nothing short of the barbarity that happened during holocaust, but they are not spoken about as much. Over 2000 Indians died during this period before the British recaptured the islands in 1945. Rumour has it that the Japanese made a secret tunnel connecting Ross Island to Port Blair, though it has not been discovered till date.

    World War II:

During World War II, the islands were under Japanese control, only nominally under the authority of the Azad Hind Fauz of Subhash Chandra Bose. He visited the islands during the war and renamed them as "Shaheed-Dweep" (Martyr Island) and "Swaraj-dweep" (Self-rule Island). On February 22, 1944, General Loganathan of the Indian National Army was made the Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On March 21, 1944, the Headquarters of the Civil Administration was established near the gurdwara at Aberdeen Bazaar. On October 2, 1944, Col. Loganathan handed over the charge to Maj. Alvi left Port Blair, never to return. Japanese Vice Admiral Hara Teizo and Major-General Tamenori Sato surrendered the islands on October 7, 1945, in a ceremony performed on the Gymkhana Ground, Port Blair.

    Dark Chapter of Cellular Jail:

Perhaps the most painful historical fact about Andaman is the history behind cellular jail, which was built to keep political prisoners who were India’s freedom fighters. The island was often popularised by the people as ‘Kala Pani’ or black waters. Thousands of prisoners were tortured and killed in jail. The jail today stands as one of the most visited landmarks by the tourists who come to the islands.

    A New Beginning:

Andaman eventually became a part of India in 1950, despite the announced intention of the British Government to resettle all native Anglo-Indians and Anglo-Burmese on these islands to form their separate nation. Andaman was declared a Union Territory of the nation in 1956. Since the 1980s, it has also become a hub for Indian defence services to develop various facilities, serving a crucial position in India's strategic role in the Bay of Bengal and the Malacca Strait.

    The Tsunami of 2004:

December 26, 2004, is remembered as a Black day in the minds of many natives of these islands. At around 8 AM, The coasts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were devastated by a 10 m (33 ft) high tsunami following an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. The number of people that lost their lives exceeded 2000, roughly 4000 children were orphaned or bore the loss of one parent, at least 40,000 people lost their homes overnight, and More than 46,000 people were injured. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami or Christmas Tsunami, caused fatalities among a large number of tourists because of the holiday season. Luckily, many of the aboriginal tribes were able to escape because of the traditions that were passed down telling them to evacuate from large waves that followed big earthquakes.

    The Island Seismology:

All of Andaman and Nicobar Isalnds lie in a Zone V seismic hazard. The islands are prone to both earthquakes and tsunamis. A tectonic process called ‘SeaFloor Spreading’ has resulted in the constant widening of the Andaman Sea. The Indian plate is diving beneath the Burmese microplate due to a process called ‘Subduction’. There have been hundreds of small earthquakes hitting the islands from time to time and continue to do so.

    The Active Volcano:

Andaman is considered to be the home to the only lava volcano found in the South Asia region. Barren Island’s volcano’s first recorded eruption was in 1787. The volcano has erupted 10 times since then, the latest in February 2017. Due to the volcano, the sea around the islands is very potent for scuba diving.

    Renaming Ceremony:

Marking the 75th anniversary of the flag hoisting by Subhash Chandra Bose, in December 2018, current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, renamed three of the islands as a tribute. Ross Island, Neil Island and Havelock Island became Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep, Shaheed Dweep, and Swaraj Dweep respectively.

    History At a Glance :

    • Ross Island was an erstwhile headquarter for the British as well as the Japanese.
    • The most widely spoken language on the islands is neither Andamanese nor Nicobarese, but Bengali followed by Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
    • The largest sea turtles in the world, Leatherback (Dermochelys Coriacea), nest here.
    • North Sentinel Island is home to the Sentinelese tribe, one of the most isolated palaeolithic tribes of the world.
    • The 20 Rupee currency note depicts the picturesque North Bay Island, as seen on the way to Mount Harriet, the second-highest peak of the archipelago.
  • Positioned between 6° and 14° North Latitude and 92° and 94° East Longitude, lie the zenith of an engulfed mountain sierras, and the glorious Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Forming a nearly 800-kilometre arc between Myanmar and Indonesia, the Islands have the Andaman Sea to their east and the Bay of Bengal to their west. Far closer to foreign lands than to the Indian mainland, the islands have been home to indigenous communities who ardently dodged communication with outsiders until the late 20th century.

The Andaman Islands consist of more than 300 islands, while 19 islands make up the Nicobars. North, Middle and South Andaman Islands are cumulatively called Great Andaman Islands, and Havelock Island blissfully lies in the southern province. One of the largest Islands of the archipelago, Havelock Island spreads across a vast area of 92.2 square kilometres. Roughly lying at a distance of 70-kilometre north-east of the capital city Port Blair, the only way to reach the island is via sea route. There are five villages on the island, namely Govinda Nagar, Radha Nagar, Bejoy Nagar, Shyam Nagar and Krishna Nagar.

The limestone, sandstone and rocks formed during the past 65 million years, contribute to the rough terrain of Andaman Islands, owing to the scarcity of perennial rivers and flatland. At the elevation of 1,197 feet, Mount Harriet is the highest point in South Andaman Islands. Havelock Island has a relatively low population density, which thus enables tourism to flourish. Indigenous tribes inhabit remote islands and are mostly off-limits to tourists. The island experiences tropical weather with sea breezes regularly moderating the climate. The average temperature ranges from 23 °C to about 30 °C. The territory welcomes southwest monsoon which usually brings 120 inches of annual rain and whirls from May through September.

Reputed for their palm-lined white-sandy beaches, plush mangroves and tropical rainforests, Andaman Islands has a diverse and vibrant marine life. Definitely, the most popular of the Andaman Islands archipelago, Havelock island, being one of the best sites for scuba diving, is an all-embracing gateway to see life underwater. With miles of astounding coastline, transcendent beaches and surreal nature, the terrain in Havelock Island also provides plenty of trekking opportunities. A walking expedition is the most rewarding way to explore the island, owing to its size and geographical location.

Endowed with a bounty of beaches, spectacular coral reefs, and rich forest cover, Havelock is also an eco-tourism hub. There are seven beaches identified in Havelock which are referred to by their number rather than their names. While Beach number 1 is adjacent to the jetty, Beach number 7, i.e. Radhanagar Beach is the most popular beach of the lot. Andaman Islands receives nearly 200,000 visitors each year, and the numbers keep growing with time. Being part of the most popular tourist trail, i.e. Port Blair-Havelock Island-Neil Island triangle, Havelock is totally worth it. We welcome you to discover Havelock Island, one of the beautiful gems floating in the Indian waters, unique for its mosaic vistas, vivid colours, mahua trees, vast coasts and tropical climate.

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands, considered a union territory in India, consists of two groups of islands. The islands located north of 10° north latitude are known as Andaman Islands while the islands located south of 10° north latitude are called Nicobar. These islands were formed by the above-sea extensions of submarine crests of mountains. The Andaman–Nicobar Islands archipelago is the emergent part of a long ridge which extends from the Arakan–Yoma ranges of western Myanmar (Burma) in the north to Sumatra in the south.

The archipelago adjoins the Andaman Islands Sea to the east, and the west by the Bay of Bengal. A 160 km wide submarine channel running parallel to the 10° N latitude between Car Nicobar and Little Andaman Islands, known as Ten Degree Channel, is a major physiographic discontinuity that separates the Andaman Islands Group to the north from the Nicobar Group to the south. The Andaman Islands Group, located c. 1200 km south-east of the mainland in the Bay of Bengal, is sometimes also referred to as the Bay Islands.

The Nicobars consists of 19 islands, and more than 300 islands make up the Andaman Islands. Collectively known as Great Andaman Islands, North, Middle, and South Andaman Islands are the main islands of this region, Other names include Landfall Island, Interview Island, the Sentinel Islands, Ritchie’s Archipelago, and Rutland Island. The highest peak, known as “Saddle Peak'' stands at 2,418 feet on North Andaman Islands, followed by Mount Thullier at 2,106 feet on Great Nicobar and Mount Harriet at 1,197 feet on South Andaman Islands.

A barren island, the only known active Volcano in south Asia lies in the Andaman Islands sea. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, there were volcanic eruptions on Barren Island. At least 11 mud volcanoes are known to be present on the islands. In 2004 the islands drew global attention when they were severely damaged by a giant tsunami that had been triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean near Indonesia.

The terrain of Andaman Islands is rough, with hills enclosing narrow longitudinal valleys, owing to its formation by sandstone, limestone, and rocks of Cenozoic age (i.e., formed during the past 65 million years). Flatland is confined to a few valleys, such as the Betapur on Middle Andaman Islands and Diglipur on North Andaman Islands. Most of the islands in Andaman Islands exhibit dense forest cover, trees that are more than 30m tall, rainforests, owing to the tropical climate contributing to the lush vegetation.

Large river bodies are scarce in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and while Nicobar is blessed with various perennial streams, Andaman Islands has one river, Kalpong. Originating from Saddle Peak, the river traverses in the northward direction for a distance of roughly 35 kilometres before it joins the Aerial Bay Creek on the east coast. The climate of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is tropical, always warm, but with sea-breezes, with temperatures typically ranging from 23 °C to 30°C. Rainfall is irregular, with islands receiving 120 inches of precipitation annually, brought by the southwest monsoon and the tropical cyclones that follow in October and November.

But those who end up here are surprised with innumerable natural marvels. You can enjoy here amidst serene beaches (some with volcanic rocks and others with pristine sand) that are perfect for turtle nesting during the season (December and January). Mangrove sanctuaries and awareness centres with the longest walking trails are also here. And if that is not enough for you, then you can also visit a beautiful waterfall and wander around vast plantations of spices after the monsoon season.

All these eruptions lie at the lowest level of the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI). On the basis of the quantity of volcanic material spewed and its strength, the index ranks the volcanoes on a scale from 1-8. The last eruption that took place in 2017 was recorded as a 2 on the index which is much in the safe limits.

Things you should know about Barren Island

A remote island in the Andaman Sea, Barren Island is popularly known for housing the only confirmed active volcano in the area of South Asia. It is situated at a distance of 138 kilometers from Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This volcano forms a part of the chain of volcanoes that is found along the belt of Sumatra till Myanmar. In 1787, the first-ever eruption was recorded here.

Barren Island volcano has been known to erupt ten times since its first eruption. Last time, there was an eruption in 2017. The years 1789, 1795, 1803-1804, and 1852 have recorded eruptions. The eruption that took place in 1991 after nearly 50 years of dormancy became the focus of a lot of scientific researches and discussions. The eruption caused a lot of damage to flora and fauna all around as it continued for a few months.

As evident from the name, Barren Island is a barren or deserted area and is not inhabited by human beings. But the island is home to a small-size goat population along with bats, birds, and rodents that have managed to survive in the extremely tough conditions.

As the island is one of the restricted-entry areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Archipelago, you are required to take special permits for visit from the local authorities. Make sure that you procure the permit if you have decided to visit this island. No night stay is permitted there. You have to plan early morning expeditions to the vicinity of the island in boats, chartered cruises and ships and take a look at the island from a distance.

After obtaining the necessary permits and making the needed arrangements, special game fishing activity, snorkeling or scuba diving expeditions can be conducted under the guidance of expert, licensed and trained professionals. These adventurous activities are extremely engaging and may take six to eight hours of your expedition time. So you need to plan everything in advance. Havelock Island-based scuba divers can be engaged to escort you during a Barren Island water exploration trip.

The island vicinity will leave you awestruck by the diversity of flora and fauna. The excursion to this island is definitely going to be worthwhile when you will witness the interesting rock or basaltic formations, the variegated topography caused by the previous lava flows, and the lively coral gardens.

The volcano island was recently in news for being active, spewing a lot of lava and ash. A team of scientists belonging to the National Institute of Oceanography from Goa visited there. These scientists rested all apprehensions calling the fulmination of the volcano to be benign. The short eruptions lasted from five to ten minutes. Ash clouds were spumed in the daytime while red hot lava fountains were ejected from the crater after sunset. Scientists have recovered black pyroclastic material like coal after sampling the sediments. For ascertaining the ecological impact of volcanic activity, repeated scientific expeditions were planned.

Barren Island is nearly three kilometers wide and has a crater measuring two kilometers having walls surrounding it as high as 250-350 meters high. For the last recorded eruption, the Explosivity Index was two on a scale of 1 to 8, which is rather low. The eruption of 1991 reduced the number of animal and bird species as it was proved catastrophic.

You can view Barren Island through an aerial view by embarking on a Sea Plane from Port Blair. The tickets are quite expensive though. The service of these Barren Island Sorties is available on an on-demand basis. Per sortie can accommodate as many as seven passengers. There are so many reasons for that. The remote locality of Long Island and the poor connectivity of this destination is the foremost reason for many. Along with that, there are very limited accommodation facilities available on Long Island. This place had decent popularity among foreign nationals until 2019. The majority of the Indian travellers don’t include this island in their itinerary as a trip to this point of attraction requires a total of ten or more days’ stay in the Andaman Islands.

This enchanting island is home to a stunning beach at Lalaji Bay six kilometers north from Long Island jetty. It is popular for its beautiful forest cover and coconut plantations. It can also be considered as the gateway to many hidden and unexplored spots like the Guitar Island and the Merk Bay Beach at North Passage Island. Here, you can have the best of both worlds- the exotic and untouched virgin beaches as well as the lush green tropical forests. Long Island is a golden feather in the crown of the Andaman Islands. It is a paradise for bird lovers if you visit it during the right season. The island has a unique marine eco-system as well.

Until the arrival of settlers in the 1970s, the island was inhabited. A plywood factory was set up near the jetty that is closed now. There is a small village nearby the jetty which is populated by settlers and factory workers from various parts of the country.

In this blog, we will let you know how you can plan a visit to the gorgeous Long Island.

What to expect while visit Long Island?

Long Island is a small rural settlement that is not connected by any road network to any of the islands. There is no blacktop road on the island. Different parts of the area are connected by a concrete footpath only. A mud road leads towards the wood. If you are a nature enthusiast, then you would love the Casuarina trees (popularly known as the Jhau tree or she-oak) alongside the footpaths that make it an adoring natural walkway. As the island is amidst the open sea, these trees also act as windbreaks for it. In Long Island, all movements are on foot. This island is the best example of eco-tourism as there are no vehicles available. While entering this island, tourists should not expect any luxury. You have to stay in eco stay accommodations.

There is a serene trek that goes through the main village, plantations, fields, regenerated forest and primary rainforest. If you love hiking, then you should definitely include this in your travel plans. This six-kilometer trail begins at the jetty and ends at Lalaji Bay. There is one more trail that runs north from Lalaji bay, which leads to a secret cove with calm water, corals and a white sandy beach. So if you want to snorkel or sunbathe in complete privacy, you know where to go!

Things to do in Long Island

On this island, you can spend your time experiencing its beauty and serenity. You can enjoy quality time swimming, lazing around in the beaches, island hopping in a private chartered boat, taking nature walks, trekking, viewing a splendid sunset from the island, indulging in nature photography, and a lot more. Lalaji Bay

It is a gorgeous, sandy beach on the west coast of Long Island. You have to take a fiber boat from the Long Island jetty to reach this serene and picturesque beach. The route from Long Island to Lalaji Bay Beach is in the midst of the open sea and is indeed an enthralling experience. On the way, the boat will cross through beautiful and unique mangrove creeks. The journey is made even more memorable with the picture-perfect scenic view. The beach has white silky sand and crystal clear water. To give a treat to your mind, body, and soul, just bask in the sun or get immersed in the clean water.

    Guitar Island

It is a marvelous island near Long Island. The island has derived its name from its appearance. You should be beware of the photoshopped photos that promote the myth that Guitar Island looks like a guitar having a hole in between depicting the soundhole. But in reality, the depiction of this island as a guitar is that the island is adjacent to the small guitar island. Thus this Small Guitar Island (which looks like the headstock of a guitar) and the Guitar Island (which looks like the body of the guitar) are joined by a sand bar (which acts like the fret-board). Hence, giving it a structure similar to a guitar.

Newlyweds want to go to such a place that doesn’t have crowds and has immense beauty. The tropical weather and vibes of this island make it a perfect romantic spot. You can spend quality time here amidst the splendor of this destination.

    Merk Bay Beach

This beach is a pristine beach accessible from Long Island. It is located on North Passage Island. North Passage Island is very close to Strait Island that hosts the primitive Ongi tribe people. Dense mangrove forest covers one side of the North Passage Island. This is the part of the island where the boat stops. It anchors itself near a wooden jetty here. One has to walk through this narrow wooden jetty and walk for few kilometers through the mangrove forest that opens up to the beautiful Merk Bay Beach. The water of this beach is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. It is a paradise for snorkeling lovers. Just carry your snorkeling gears and experience the best rich marine life there. Merk Bay Beach offers an experience very similar or even better than Radhanagar beach located in Havelock Island.

This place can be visited at any time of the year as it has a moderate climate. But the best time to plan a vacation is between October and May. During this time, the weather is extremely pleasant there thus making it the best time to enjoy water sports at the beaches. The sky is clear and the temperature is pleasing.

    How to reach Long Island?

Over 80 kilometers from Port Blair and 35 kilometers north of Havelock Island, Long Island is connected by ferry from Port Blair, Neil Island and Havelock Island. It is connected by road from Diglipur and Port Blair.

How to reach Long Island from Rangat?

By bus- The most affordable option to reach Long Island from Port Blair is to first reach Rangat and from there, you can take a government ferry to Long Island. From the capital city, you can reach Rangat via a government-operated bus 4:30 AM. It will take nearly eight hours to reach there. The bus will pass through Andaman Grand Trunk Road to reach Yeratta Jetty in Rangat. You will have to board a government-operated boat to Long Island from the jetty. It normally takes one hour from Rangat to Reach Long Island in a boat. You should note that the ferry doesn’t sail on a daily basis from Rangat to Long Island. It operates on alternative days, usually Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday at 9 AM and at 4 PM. It is subject to weather conditions as well. However, this schedule can change anytime without any prior notice. Also, you cannot book the tickets in advance.

By private cab- You can also reach Rangat in a personal vehicle from Port Blair. Based upon the availability, the driver may help you in getting the tickets for the government ferry. As an alternative to the government ferry that goes from Rangat to Long Island, there is also a chartered speed boat service to move from Rangat to Long Island. As Long Island is still not completely wireless, the online suggestions or bookings don’t work at all for it. Thus, you need to contact a local person for making the arrangements to visit there.

How to Reach Long Island from Port Blair?

You can reach Long Island from the capital city by hiring a private chartered boat. This will be exciting along with a bit expensive. If you are a group of around eight to ten people, then the tour will be fun and the cost will get divided as well. This option can be considered and you can sail through the archipelago of the islands before reaching Long Island. Fishing enthusiasts can consider game fishing during the journey. In case you are interested in game fishing, then you should inform your vendor in advance so that they get the boat equipped with fishing gear. This way, your journey will be more adventurous.

Another way is to take a government ferry to move directly from Port Blair to Long Island. However, this voyage would be an entire day-long journey. The ferry will follow this route- Port Blair - Neil Island - Havelock Island - Rangat - Long Island. You should know in advance that the sailing is not scheduled daily and the ticket opens only on the day of departure. Thus, if you are in the Andaman Islands for a longer time, then you can consider this potion. But if you have planned a vacation for nearly a week, then visiting Long Island could be difficult for you as there is a lot to do there and you will not be having enough time. However, if you are a repeated visitor to the Andaman Islands and have seen everything else, then you can consider this option.

How to reach Long Island from Havelock Islands and Neil Island?

You will be required to take a government ferry from Havelock Island to Long Island. The ferry is operational on alternate days. This is the same ferry that sails from Port Blair to Long Island. It takes a pit stop in Neil Island, Havelock Island, and Rangat Islands before moving to Long Island. The same applies to visit Long Island from Neil Island. The government ferry also takes a pit stop in Neil Island. Therefore, from Neil Island also, you need to take the same boat to Long Island.

Where to stay in Long Island?

There is a government accommodation known as Surmai Resort and a private property named Blue Planet in Long Island. You can stay at any one of these properties. Surmai Resort has more facilities and is recommended for Indian travellers visiting this island or for any traveler who has planned this trip as a family holiday. On the other hand, Blue Planet is more of an eco hut of thatched roofing and walls. It has only low lying mattresses and mosquito nets as their major amenities. Thus, backpackers can consider this option.

As online things won’t work properly for Long Island, you will be requiring assistance for local companies to get your accommodation booked. When in Long Island, do not expect any luxurious or modern accommodation. The facilities are very basic and kind of eco-stays.
